How to restore faded patio furniture

First: is it fade or is it dirt?

A surprising proportion of what people diagnose as fading is a film of algae, pollen and atmospheric grime that has built up over a couple of seasons. It dulls color, flattens gloss and looks exactly like UV damage.

Test it in five minutes: clean a small inconspicuous area properly with an appropriate cleaner for the material and let it dry. If the cleaned patch is noticeably brighter than its surroundings, you have dirt, not fade, and the whole job is a clean. If it looks the same, it is genuine fading and the rest of this page applies.

Gray teak — fully recoverable

Teak grays because UV photo-oxidizes lignin in roughly the top 0.1mm. The wood underneath is unchanged — the decay resistance sits in the heartwood, not the surface — so restoring the color is purely cosmetic and entirely achievable.

1. Clean with a two-step teak cleaner and brightener. Step one lifts the gray oxidized layer and any black mildew staining; step two neutralizes and brightens. Work in shade so it does not dry on the surface.
2. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry completely. A full day, ideally.
3. Sand only if needed. Light sanding evens out any raised grain. Avoid aggressive sanding — it removes wood every time, and doing it every couple of years measurably thins a board.
4. Oil or seal if you want the honey color. And understand you are now on an annual schedule, because oil weathers off. Leaving it clean and unoiled is a perfectly good outcome.

Chalked resin and plastic — partly recoverable

Chalking on resin and molded plastic is degraded polymer at the surface. Cleaning removes the powder; a protectant restores some depth of color and gloss by wetting the surface optically.

1. Clean thoroughly with an oxygenated cleaner and a soft brush. Rinse and dry.
2. Apply a UV protectant, wipe on and buff off.
3. Repeat the protectant every few months in full sun, or it does nothing.

Expect improvement rather than restoration. Chalking is material loss, and what is gone is gone.

Note that this does not apply to HDPE poly lumber, which fades uniformly and very slowly because the color runs through the board. If poly lumber looks dull, it is almost always dirt.

Faded painted metal — recoverable by repainting

Powder coat fades by gloss loss first and then chalking, and the rate depends on a coating tier that consumer furniture almost never states — the architectural standards require five or ten years of Florida exposure, and patio furniture rarely certifies to either.

1. Clean and let dry.
2. Apply a protectant. On mild chalking this alone often looks acceptable.
3. If not, the real fix is repainting: scuff lightly, prime any bare metal, and apply an exterior enamel. On steel, treat any rust first — our rust guide has the sequence.

Faded fabric — not recoverable

This is the honest one. When outdoor fabric fades, the dye molecules themselves have been broken down by UV. There is nothing to bring back.

• Fabric dyes and sprays do not hold outdoors. They sit on the surface, wash out unevenly, and usually look worse than the fade did.
• Cleaning helps if there is mildew or grime on top of the fade. Worth doing, but it will not restore color.
• Replacement is the answer. Cushion covers if they unzip; whole cushions if not; a replacement canopy for an umbrella if the manufacturer sells one.

When you replace, buy solution-dyed acrylic. It is the only fabric format with a published multi-year fade warranty, and it is why this problem does not recur on the same schedule.
