The short answer

If you want the lowest possible price on a patio set and you do not much care which one, buy at the end of the season, when retailers are clearing floor and warehouse space for holiday stock. That is the advice every article on this subject gives, and for that shopper it is correct.

It is also the advice this site is least interested in, because it quietly assumes the furniture is interchangeable. If you are here, you are probably trying to buy a set once rather than every third summer — and the timing question looks different from that side. The furniture that gets discounted hardest is, with real consistency, the furniture built to be replaced. The brands whose warranties run twenty years do not run 70%-off clearances, because they are not sitting on last year's model.

How the calendar actually works

Patio furniture retail runs on a seasonal cycle, and the cycle is more reliable than any particular sale. Four phases, in the order you meet them:

The patio furniture year, from the buyer's side

PhaseRoughlySelectionWhat it is good for
New-season arrivalLate winter into early springBest of the yearGetting the exact model, color and size you want
Peak seasonMemorial Day through midsummerThinning in popular sizesHoliday-weekend promotions; worst time for availability
End of seasonAfter Labor Day into fallPicked overThe deepest markdowns, on whatever is left
Off seasonLate fall and winterNarrow but not emptyCovers, cushions and care products; buying ahead for spring

Memorial Day is the last Monday in May and Labor Day the first Monday in September, so the peak window shifts by a few days each year. Those are calendar facts; the selection and markdown patterns are how this category behaves, not a guarantee about any retailer.

The trade-off between those phases is not price against patience. It is price against choice. In spring you can have the color you actually want; in September you can have whatever did not sell, cheaply. Both are legitimate purchases. Neither is a bargain if you end up with a set you did not want in a color you will look at for a decade — and in poly lumber, where the color is compounded through the material rather than painted on, that decade is literal.

Why clearance favors disposable sets

Here is the mechanism, because once you see it the whole calendar reads differently.

Deep end-of-season markdowns come from inventory pressure: a retailer has floor space committed to patio furniture through the summer and needs it for something else by October. The sets that take the deepest cuts are the ones in that position — high volume, seasonal styling, a model number that changes next year, and a margin wide enough to absorb the cut.

That describes the budget tier almost perfectly. A woven set on a powder-coated steel frame, restyled annually, is exactly the product that must clear. It is also the product we keep finding fails first, for reasons that have nothing to do with the discount: the frame rusts from the fastener holes outward and the cushions go chalky. Our durability roundup works through which materials survive and which ones do not.

There is one genuine exception, and it is worth taking: discontinued colors from good brands. A quality piece in a color nobody wanted is still a quality piece. The thing to check before buying it is whether the line is being discontinued entirely, because that affects matching pieces later — and on a modular set, the ability to add to it is half the reason you bought it.

The brands that barely discount

We went and looked, rather than assuming. On October 8, 2026, POLYWOOD's own store was running a named seasonal promotion — a sale with a title rather than a clearance section, and free standard delivery in the contiguous US presented as a permanent offer rather than a sale term. The Trex Outdoor Furniture store advertised the same free standard shipping and its 20-year warranty, and carried no clearance section and no percentage-off offer at all.

That is the pattern across this end of the category, and it follows from the product. POLYWOOD's Classic Adirondack has the same 24 colors and the same twenty-year lumber warranty this year as last year. There is no outgoing model to flush. The furniture is the model.

Practically, that means two things. Waiting for a 60% cut on poly lumber is waiting for something that does not happen; you are choosing between full price now and a modest promotion at some point. And since the lumber, hardware and warranty on POLYWOOD and Trex Outdoor Furniture are identical — the same company builds both — the useful move is to price the matched pair on the day and buy whichever is cheaper, rather than to wait.

Timing, category by category

Covers, cushions and care products

This is where off-season buying is unambiguously right. A cover has no model year that matters, no color you will regret and no fit that changes — only measurements, which you already have. Buy at the end of the season for next, and buy to the furniture's dimensions rather than to a category name; the sizing logic is on the covers roundup, and the manufacturer's own size chart is the thing to measure against.

Cushions are the same logic with a deadline attached: fabric and foam are the first things to fail on an otherwise sound set, and a solution-dyed acrylic replacement set is a fraction of the cost of a new set. Buying those in the off season is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in this entire category.

Umbrellas and shade

Buy ahead of the season you need them, not during it. Umbrella stock thins out by midsummer in the sizes people actually want, and the wind-rated frames go first. Treasure Garden's approach of selling a replacement canopy rather than a replacement umbrella also means an older frame plus a new canopy is often the right purchase, and that has no season at all. Sizing and fabric come before timing here — our sizing guide covers it.

Bases, hardware and fasteners

Never worth waiting for. These are cheap relative to the thing they hold down, and an under-weighted umbrella is the most common expensive failure on a patio. Buy the base with the umbrella.

Seating and dining sets

This is the only category where the decision is genuinely finely balanced, and it comes down to which tier you are buying.

  • Budget tier: wait for end of season. The product is designed around that cycle and the discount is real.
  • Mid tier: buy in spring if the specific model matters to you, in September if it does not.
  • Buy-it-for-life tier: timing barely moves the price. Buy when you want it, in the color you want, and put the energy into choosing the right piece instead.

Why we print no discount percentages

You will not find "expect 40 to 70% off in September" on this page, and the reason is the same reason we do not print prices in prose anywhere on this site.

A discount figure is a claim about a specific retailer in a specific year, and it rots within weeks. Every number of that kind we found while researching this page traced back to another article rather than to a retailer's published terms, which is a chain worth distrusting. So the buy buttons here show the live Amazon price where we have it and send you to check it where we do not, and the text sticks to the structure of the year, which does not change.

The same discipline is why there is no "deals" section on this site. A page that has to be rewritten weekly to stay true is a page that is wrong most of the time. What we can tell you honestly is which pieces are worth owning, and our main roundup and the brands directory are where that work lives.

Deciding whether to wait

  1. Is there a specific model and color you want? If yes, buy when it is in stock. Waiting risks the thing you were waiting for.
  2. Will you add matching pieces later? If yes, avoid clearance on a line being discontinued, however good the price.
  3. Which tier is it? Budget sets reward waiting. Twenty-year poly lumber barely moves.
  4. Do you need it this season? Furniture you cannot use for eight months is not cheaper, it is prepaid.
  5. Is it a cover, a cushion set or a cleaner? Then buy off-season, every time. There is no downside.
  6. Check the live price rather than a season. Direct-from-brand promotions do not line up with retail clearance, and free shipping can be worth more than the discount on anything large.

If the set you are replacing is going into storage rather than to the curb, do that part properly first — the winter storage guide is the difference between furniture that comes out in April and furniture that comes out needing work.

Timing is the largest lever a buyer has, which makes more sense once you know what you are paying for in the first place: why patio furniture is so expensive.

POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack Chair

1. Worth waiting for a promotion

POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack Chair

POLYWOOD · Score 9.3/10

The reference HDPE Adirondack: color compounded through the lumber, a 20-year residential warranty, and nothing on it to rust or splinter.

Key specifications

  • 100% HDPE lumber, color and UV inhibitors compounded through the material
  • Marine-grade stainless hardware
  • 20-year residential lumber warranty
  • Arrives flat-packed; bolt-together assembly

How it scores

Fade resistance

Rust and corrosion
9.5
Wind and stability
8.5
Build and hardware
9.0
Warranty strength

What works

  • Fade behavior is a material property here, not a surface coat that can wear off
  • Warranty language explicitly covers splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling and rot
  • Heavy enough to stay put on a gusty evening
  • Washes clean with soap and water — no sealing, oiling or refinishing, ever

The trade-offs

  • Costs multiples of a big-box resin chair, and the value only shows up over years
  • Heavy to move around a deck on your own
  • Sanding it voids the warranty, so deep scratches stay

Classic Accessories Ravenna Patio Furniture Cover

Classic Accessories · Score 8.1/10

The cover that does the two things cheap covers skip: it vents, and it has enough structure to shed water instead of pooling it.

  • Air vents to reduce condensation
  • Elastic hem with click-close straps

Solution-dyed acrylic is the only outdoor fabric with a published multi-year fade warranty, and it is why these cost what they cost.

Key specifications

  • Solution-dyed acrylic fabric
  • Sunbrella publishes 5-year upholstery and sling coverage, 10 years on shade and marine lines
  • Sold by many cushion makers rather than one brand

What works

  • The warranty is published and specific rather than implied
  • Cleans with a diluted bleach solution without losing color

  • Two to four times the price of printed polyester cushions
  • The fabric warranty covers the fabric, not the foam or the stitching

  • Costs more than most people expect to spend on an umbrella

Common questions

When is the cheapest time to buy patio furniture?
After Labor Day and through the fall, when retailers clear seasonal floor space for holiday stock. Selection by then is whatever did not sell, so this window suits a shopper who is flexible about model and color rather than one who wants a specific set.
Is it better to buy patio furniture in spring or fall?
It depends on which you value more: choice or price. Spring brings the full range in every color and size, with holiday-weekend promotions rather than clearance. Fall brings the deepest markdowns on a picked-over selection. If the exact model matters to you, buy in spring; if it does not, buy in fall.
Does POLYWOOD ever go on sale?
It runs named seasonal promotions on its own store rather than a standing clearance section - a sale with a title was running when we checked on October 8, 2026 - and free standard delivery in the contiguous US is presented as a permanent offer rather than a sale term. Because the product does not have an annual model change, there is no outgoing stock to flush, so deep clearance-style cuts are not part of how the brand sells.
Should I buy patio furniture on clearance?
It depends on what is being cleared. A discontinued color from a brand with a long warranty is a genuine bargain. An annually restyled budget set is cheaper per purchase and more expensive per year, because it is the tier that fails first. Before buying a clearance set, check whether the whole line is being discontinued, since that decides whether you can add matching pieces later.
What patio items should I always buy off-season?
Covers, replacement cushions and care products. None of them has a model year that matters, a color you will regret or a fit that changes, so buying at the end of one season for the next has no downside. Replacement cushions in particular are the cheapest meaningful upgrade in this category, since fabric and foam fail long before a sound frame does.
