Measure the seat platform of the frame you already own — width, depth and the cushion thickness you want — then buy by fabric type, because solution-dyed acrylic holds color for years where printed polyester fades in two seasons. Replacing cushions on a sound frame is almost always better value than replacing the furniture.

Replacing beats replacing the furniture

Cushions are the shortest-lived component of most patio furniture by a wide margin. Printed polyester cushions realistically give two to four years before visible fade, while the aluminum or poly frame under them is a fifteen- to twenty-year product. That mismatch is why so much structurally sound furniture gets replaced: the set looks tired, and the tired part is the fabric.

This page is about buying for a frame you already have. If you are choosing cushions as part of a new purchase, or comparing fabrics on their merits, our cushion roundup is the page for that.

How to measure the frame you own

Measure the furniture, not the old cushion. A compressed, sagging cushion is smaller than the space it was made for, and a cushion that was always slightly wrong will reproduce the same mistake.

Measuring for replacement cushions

MeasurementTake it fromNotes
Seat widthInside arm to inside arm, at the seat platformIf the arms taper, use the narrowest point so the cushion drops in
Seat depthThe back support to the front edge of the platformOn slatted frames, measure to the outside edge of the front slat
Back heightThe platform surface to the top of the back supportOnly needed if you are replacing back cushions too
ThicknessA decision, not a measurementThicker raises your seat height; check it still clears the arms and the table

Write the numbers down in width x depth x thickness order, which is how cushion sizes are listed. Measure each seat on a sectional separately - modular pieces are not always identical.

The method is the mirror image of measuring for a cover, where you measure the outside of the furniture rather than the inside. If you are doing both jobs, the cover measuring guide sets out that side.

Standard sizes, and when you are outside them

Most mass-market outdoor furniture is built around a handful of standard cushion footprints, which is the single most useful thing about this category: it means off-the-shelf replacements genuinely fit a lot of frames. Deep-seat sets in particular cluster tightly, and standard sizing is why the mainstream cushion lines exist at all.

You are likely outside the standard range if:

  • The furniture was sold as a complete set by a single brand with its own cushion dimensions, especially premium wicker.
  • The frame is custom or Amish-built. Small-batch makers use their own platform sizes.
  • The seat is an unusual shape — a curved sectional corner, a trapezoidal wedge, a rounded chaise end.

In those cases the options narrow to the original manufacturer, a custom cushion maker, or re-covering the existing foam. Re-covering is the cheapest route if the foam is still sound, and the only one that keeps an exact fit.

What to look for in the fabric

One question answers most of this: did the color go into the fiber, or onto it?

  • Solution-dyed acrylic has pigment added to the liquid polymer before the fiber is spun, so color runs through the strand. Sunbrella publishes five years of coverage on upholstery and sling lines and ten years on shade and marine lines — the strongest published commitment in outdoor fabric — and it tolerates cleaning with a diluted bleach solution without losing color.
  • Printed or surface-dyed polyester is colored on the outside. It is cheaper by a multiple, and it fades visibly in a couple of seasons of full sun.
  • "Fade-resistant" is not the same claim as solution-dyed. It is a comparative word with no published standard behind it.

A faded cushion cannot be restored, because the dye molecules themselves have broken down — which is why our restoration guide ends at replacement for fabric while offering real fixes for wood and metal.

Fill, and the part no warranty covers

Read the fabric warranty carefully: it covers the fabric. Not the foam, not the stitching, not the zips. Those three are what actually end most cushions, and they are rarely specified in a listing at all.

  • Quick-dry reticulated foam lets water pass straight through and is the right fill for furniture that stays outside. Standard polyester fill holds water and stays damp in the middle.
  • Removable zippered covers are worth insisting on. They let you wash the cover and dry the fill separately, and they make the cushion repairable.
  • Ties or straps keep cushions on the furniture in wind. Without them, cushions end up in the garden, which is also how they get dirty enough to need washing.

Before buying a replacement set it is worth knowing what you should expect from it: how long outdoor cushions last separates the fabric clock from the fill clock.

Common questions

How do I measure for replacement outdoor cushions?
Measure the frame rather than the old cushion, because a compressed cushion is smaller than the space it was made for. Take the seat width from inside arm to inside arm at the platform, the seat depth from the back support to the front edge, and decide the thickness you want. Record it as width by depth by thickness, and measure each seat on a sectional separately.
Are outdoor cushions a standard size?
Much of the mass market is, which is why off-the-shelf replacement lines fit so many frames - deep-seat sets in particular cluster around a handful of footprints. You are likely outside the standard range with premium branded sets, custom or Amish-built frames, and unusual shapes like curved sectional corners. Then your options are the original maker, a custom cushion shop, or re-covering the existing foam.
What fabric should replacement outdoor cushions be?
Solution-dyed acrylic, if you want to do this once. The pigment is added to the liquid polymer before the fiber is spun, so color runs through the strand instead of sitting on it, and Sunbrella publishes five years of coverage on upholstery and sling lines and ten on shade and marine lines. Printed polyester costs a fraction as much and fades visibly within two seasons of full sun.
Is it worth replacing cushions instead of the furniture?
Usually, yes. Printed polyester cushions give two to four years before visible fade while the aluminum or poly frame underneath is a fifteen to twenty year product, so the tired-looking part is almost always the fabric. Replacing cushions on a sound frame costs a fraction of a new set, and upgrading to solution-dyed acrylic at the same time stops the cycle repeating.
