Why outdoor things fade
Ultraviolet light carries enough energy to break chemical bonds. In a dye molecule, a broken bond means the molecule no longer absorbs the same wavelengths — so the color goes. In a polymer, broken chains mean the surface becomes brittle and powdery, which is the chalking you see on old plastic chairs and which also scatters light and makes the color look washed out.
Nothing prevents this. UV inhibitors slow it by absorbing the energy preferentially and dissipating it as heat, which is why they are compounded into every serious outdoor plastic. What differs between products is not whether fading happens but where it happens and how visible it is when it does.
Through-color versus surface color
This is the whole mechanism, and once you can spot it you can predict fade behavior from a listing.

The coating tier point is worth expanding, because it is the one case where a real published standard exists. Architectural finishes are specified against AAMA tiers, and the difference between them is measured in years of actual South Florida exposure — five years for AAMA 2604 and ten for 2605. Consumer patio furniture almost never states a tier, which is itself informative.
Reading a fabric spec
Outdoor fabric listings use a lot of words that sound like commitments and are not. "Fade-resistant" is not a standard. "UV-treated" usually means a surface finish. The term that actually means something is solution-dyed: the pigment is added to the liquid polymer before the fiber is extruded, so every fiber is colored all the way through.
Solution-dyed acrylic is the format with published warranties behind it. Sunbrella publishes five years on upholstery and sling fabrics and ten on shade and marine lines, and that ten-year tier is the one intended for constant sun — which is exactly what an umbrella canopy gets.
Protecting what you already own
If the furniture is already bought, the levers are smaller but real:
- Shade is the biggest one. An umbrella over a seating group does more for cushion life than any product you can apply. Our umbrella picks are worth reading as a fade-prevention purchase, not just a comfort one.
- A UV protectant on plastics and painted metal. It genuinely slows chalking, and it needs reapplying every few months in full sun to be worth doing at all.
- Cover it when the patio is not in use for weeks at a time. Not nightly — that is a chore nobody sustains — but for the shoulder seasons and winter.
- Replace cushions rather than the set. Faded cushions make a sound frame look finished. New solution-dyed ones make it look new.
