What HDPE poly lumber is

High-density polyethylene is the plastic used for milk jugs, cutting boards and chemical tanks. Poly lumber is that polymer extruded into solid boards dimensioned like timber, with UV inhibitors and pigment compounded into the melt before extrusion rather than applied afterward.

The result behaves nothing like the thin, hollow resin furniture people associate with the word "plastic." A poly lumber board is solid all the way through, heavy, and machined and bolted like wood. POLYWOOD describes its lumber as 100% HDPE with UV inhibitors, pigments and protective compounds and nothing else.

What it does not do

• Absorb water, so it cannot rot, swell, or be damaged by freeze-thaw.
• Rust — there is no ferrous metal in it at all. Hardware is stainless.
• Splinter, because there is no grain.
• Support insect damage, because there is nothing in it to eat.
• Need sealing, painting, staining or oiling, ever.

Through-color, and why it matters

Everything outdoors fades. What differs is whether fading takes a surface away or happens evenly through a material that is the same color at every depth.

Painted wood, powder-coated metal and printed fabric all hold color on the surface. Lose the surface, lose the color, and the result is patchy — visibly worse on the sunny side, with sharp lines where a cushion or a table edge shaded part of it. HDPE lumber is pigmented in the melt, so a scratch reveals the same color underneath and fading is a slow uniform softening nobody notices year to year.

The practical consequence is that HDPE furniture looks consistent as it ages rather than looking damaged. That is a different quality of aging, and it is the main reason these chairs still look intentional at year twelve.

Reading the 20-year warranty

A number of years on its own means little. What makes the HDPE warranties unusual is that they name outcomes. POLYWOOD's residential terms state the furniture shall not splinter, crack, chip, peel or rot, or suffer structural damage from insect infestation, for twenty years of normal residential use.

Two exclusions worth knowing before you buy:

• Sanding voids it. Poly lumber scratches, and the instinct to sand a scratch out is exactly wrong — it scars the surface and ends the coverage.
• Painting voids it. Which is reasonable, since the color is already in the material and paint on HDPE has nothing to key into anyway.

Note also that cushions, where a set has them, are warranted separately and much more briefly. The lumber warranty covers lumber.

The real trade-offs

This site recommends HDPE more than any other material, so it is worth being precise about its costs.

The recycled-content question

Most poly lumber brands use recycled HDPE, often from milk jugs and ocean-bound plastic waste streams. This is a genuine environmental positive and it is also, straightforwardly, a marketing asset — both things are true.

What matters functionally is whether the recycled feedstock is properly sorted and compounded. Well-processed recycled HDPE performs the same as virgin material; poorly sorted feedstock with mixed polymers can be less consistent. The brands with long warranties have an obvious incentive to control this, which is another reason to read the warranty as a quality signal rather than just a promise.
