Quick picks

Ranked on the two numbers that separate a bench from a box - published seat load rating and usable interior depth - then on ventilation, lid support and whether the brand names the polymer.

Scores are our own, assessed from published specifications, warranty terms and owner-reported outcomes — not from laboratory testing. Prices are shown live on Amazon; we never print a figure we cannot verify.

A storage bench is sold as two things at once, and almost every listing in the category is honest about only one of them. The storage half is easy to verify: brands publish gallon figures, and the gallons are usually there. The seating half is where the category gets quiet. Of the six picks below, exactly one publishes a seat load rating - 551 lb on the Keter Solana - and that single number is the clearest signal in the whole category. If a brand will not say what its seat holds, it is selling you a deck box with a flat lid and letting you assume the rest.

The short answer

Buy the Keter Solana 70 Gal if you want one object that does both jobs competently: Keter publishes the capacity, the load rating, both sets of dimensions, the material and the warranty term, which puts it alone in this category for disclosure. Buy the Greesum 80 Gallon if volume per dollar matters more than published specifications. Buy the Suncast Elements dining bench if the bench is going next to a table, because deck-box height and dining height are nine inches apart and no amount of storage fixes a seat that is too low to eat at.

And if what you actually want is a bench that will still look like a bench in fifteen years, buy the SERWALL HDPE bench and a separate box. That is two purchases instead of one, and it is the honest recommendation this site keeps arriving at: the storage-bench category is built almost entirely out of resin, and resin is a shorter proposition than the HDPE poly lumber we argue for on the poly lumber reference page.

Two jobs, one object

The reason this category disappoints people is that the two jobs pull in opposite directions. Storage wants volume, which means a deep box with a big lid. Seating wants a comfortable height, a back to lean on and a seat that does not flex. Every design choice favors one at the expense of the other:

  • Volume versus seat height. A box tall enough to hold cushions upright puts its lid at roughly 22 to 24 inches, which is a low perch. Bring the lid down to a comfortable 17 to 18 inches and the interior loses most of its depth.
  • A back versus a lid. A storage bench with a real backrest has to hinge the seat, not the top, which complicates the structure and shrinks the opening. Most brands skip the back entirely and sell you a lid.
  • Load rating versus panel count. Flat-pack resin boxes clip together from panels. Panels are why they ship cheaply and why a seat that is not internally braced will bow in the middle.

So the first decision is not which bench. It is which job you are actually buying for. If the answer is storage with occasional perching, the deck-box-shaped picks here are fine and our deck box roundup has more volume for the same money. If the answer is seating that happens to swallow a cover and a cushion, the Suncast love seat and the SERWALL bench are the two that take the seat seriously.

What actually decides a storage bench

In rough order of how much it matters once the thing is on your deck:

  • 1. Published seat load rating. Not the box weight, not the capacity - the figure for what the seat holds. Keter states 551 lb and two to three people on the Solana. Nobody else here states anything, which is itself the answer.
  • 2. Usable interior depth. Gallons are a liquid measure applied to a box you fill with foam rectangles. The Solana is 70 gallons but only 14.9 inches deep inside, and a stack of deep-seat cushions is taller than that. Depth decides what fits; gallons decide how much of it.
  • 3. Ventilation, stated rather than implied. Keter specifies built-in ventilation on the Solana and describes its deck boxes as UV-resistant and ventilated while never using the word waterproof. That is the honest position. A sealed bench in the sun condenses moisture onto the underside of the seat overnight and drips it back onto whatever is inside.
  • 4. Lid support. A gas strut or a stay that holds the seat open is not a luxury; a heavy lid dropping on a hand is the injury in this category, and the strut is the part most likely to fail first. The Tangkula is the only pick here that names one.
  • 5. Whether the polymer is named. "Resin" is a category. Polypropylene, polyethylene and HDPE are materials, and they age differently. A brand that names the polymer is giving you something to check; a brand that says resin is not.
  • 6. Drainage, not sealing. A ribbed floor that lifts contents off the base and runs water to a corner is worth more than any lid gasket. A flat floor puts the bottom cushion in whatever gets in.
  • 7. Lockability. Most benches take a padlock through a molded or metal hasp - the Solana latch is metal and padlock-compatible, with the lock not included. Mostly this stops a seat blowing open in a gust, which is the real reason to want it.

The six picks compared

How the picks differ on the things that decide a storage bench

Tangkula 45 Gallon45 gallonNot publishedZippered inner liner and a gas strut; acacia lid over a woven body
SERWALL HDPE BenchNo storageNot publishedHDPE poly lumber, high backrest, 58 in wide - the long-term seat

Capacities and ratings are the manufacturers' own stated figures where they publish them, and recorded as not published where they do not. Prices move constantly in this category and are shown live above rather than written into this text.

Interior depth beats gallons

The useful conversion in storage furniture is not gallons to liters, it is gallons to cushions. A standard deep-seat outdoor cushion - seat plus back - eats roughly 25 to 35 gallons per seat once you account for the air you cannot squash out of foam. On paper that puts a four-seat set at 90 to 110 gallons, which no bench on this page reaches.

But the ceiling is not really volume. It is height. The Solana publishes an interior of 50.4 x 19.5 x 14.9 inches, and a folded deep-seat back cushion is thicker than 14.9 inches on its own. What a storage bench genuinely holds is a folded cover, throw pillows, seat pads laid flat, pool towels, garden tools, kids' outdoor toys and the cushions off a bistro or two-seat set. Planning to winter a full sectional's soft goods in one is the mistake that makes people call the category useless.

What each capacity band on this page actually swallows

Stated capacityRealistic contentsFootprintWho it suits
23 to 30 gallonsA folded cover, seat pads laid flat, table kit, a few toolsLove-seat or two-seat widthBalconies, and benches that live at a table
45 gallonsA cover plus a cushion or two, with the liner keeping dust offShort and lowSmall decks and anyone storing fabric rather than hardware
70 to 80 gallonsCushions off a bistro or two-seat set, or a full set of coversBench-sized, five feet or underThe common right answer
Over 100 gallonsA seating set's cushionsReads as storage, not seatingNobody buying a bench - buy a deck box instead

Stated capacity is internal volume, not usable volume: hinge hardware, struts and any internal shelf take some of it back, and foam does not fill a box the way water does.

If the real task is wintering a whole set, stop looking at benches. The volume you need lives in the 130 to 150 gallon boxes on our deck box page, and the order of operations for doing it properly is on how to store patio furniture for winter.

The steel nobody mentions

Here is the detail that changed how we rank this category. Keter's own specification for the Solana gives the material as steel-reinforced polypropylene. That is exactly how you get a 551 lb seat rating out of a flat-pack resin panel, and it is good engineering. It also means the one component in the bench that can corrode is sealed inside the seat where you will never see it, never inspect it and cannot treat it.

We flag this rather than hide it because it is the same mechanism as every other rust failure on this site: steel behind a coating is protected only while the coating is intact, and the furniture that fails is the furniture where you could not see the breach coming. The full version of that argument is on rust and weld failures. Practically, it means two things. Keep the drain path clear so the interior is not standing in water for weeks, and treat the published 2-year warranty - not the fade-free icon on the same page - as the number you plan around.

Where to put it

Three placement decisions do more for a storage bench than any feature on the listing.

  • Against something, not in the open. An empty storage bench is a large, light, hollow object with a lid, which is a description of a kite. Sited in a corner with two walls to stop it traveling, it stays put. In the middle of a deck in a gale, a lightly loaded bench is the first thing to move - and the Solana is only 31 lb empty.
  • Off the deck surface if the deck pools. Resin does not rot, but the contents of a bench whose floor sits in standing water do not care. A pair of pavers or rubber feet raises it enough to break the capillary path, which is the same fix as protecting furniture from rain.
  • Out of all-day direct sun where you can manage it. UV is what ages resin and polypropylene: the surface chalks long before anything structural happens. An annual wipe with a protectant genuinely slows it, and the routine is on protecting outdoor storage from UV.

And load it dry. A bench is ventilated, not dehumidified. Whatever goes in damp stays damp for weeks, which is how people end up blaming the bench for mildew that came in with the cushions. The mechanism is spelled out on can patio furniture cushions get wet, and it is the single most common way this category disappoints.

What to avoid

  • Any bench that advertises a capacity but no load rating, if you intend to sit on it. That is most of the category. It is fine when you are buying storage; it is a problem when you are buying a seat.
  • Wooden storage benches, unless you want the maintenance. A wooden box sits on a wet deck, holds water in its base and has end grain at every corner, and the inside never sees sun so it dries slowly. Everything on how long wooden outdoor furniture lasts applies, with that added problem.
  • Benches sold with cushions included. The cushion is almost always polyester over closed-cell foam, which holds water for days. Buy the bench bare and pair it with fabric that is engineered for it - Sunbrella publishes a 5-year warranty on its upholstery and sling fabrics, which is a different class of commitment. Options are on the cushions roundup.
  • "Waterproof" as a reason to buy. No vented bench is waterproof, and the vented ones are the good ones. Judge the floor and the drain path instead.
  • A bench as a substitute for a furniture cover. They solve different problems; the other half is on the covers roundup.

One note on origin

Two of the six picks here are Suncast, and Suncast is unusual in this category for making a first-party manufacturing claim: its own About page states that its products are designed and made in the USA using 100% domestically sourced resin, and describes the company as one of the largest employers in the western Chicago area. That is a specific, checkable claim rather than an assembled-here hedge, and it is rarer than the flag icons on listings suggest. How to read origin claims generally - and which brands survive the test - is on patio furniture made in the USA.

It does not make the Suncast picks the most durable things here; the HDPE bench is, and HDPE carries its UV inhibitors and color compounded through the material rather than coated onto it. It does mean that if origin matters to you, this is one of the few corners of outdoor furniture where you can act on it without guessing.

Keter Solana 70 Gal Outdoor Storage Bench for Patio Cushions

1. Best overall

Keter Solana 70 Gal Outdoor Storage Bench for Patio Cushions

Keter · Score 7.4/10

The reference storage bench: 70 gallons under a seat rated for 551 pounds, with the ventilation a cushion box needs and a warranty much shorter than the fade claim.

Key specifications

  • 70 gallon stated capacity, under the seat
  • 551 lb stated weight capacity; Keter lists it as seating two to three people
  • 55.1 in wide x 23.6 in deep x 33 in high; interior 50.4 x 19.5 x 14.9 in
  • Material listed as steel-reinforced polypropylene with a wood-look texture
  • Built-in ventilation; metal latch takes a standard padlock (not included)
  • Limited 2-year warranty

How it scores

Fade resistance
7.0
Rust and corrosion
8.0
Wind and stability
6.5
Build and hardware
7.5
Warranty strength
5.0

What works

  • Keter publishes the numbers that matter - capacity, load rating and both sets of dimensions - which most brands in this category do not
  • Built-in ventilation is specified rather than implied, and that is what keeps cushions out of trouble
  • A 551 lb seat rating means the lid is real seating, not a lid you perch on
  • Resin has no rust or rot path, and the texture is molded through rather than printed on

The trade-offs

  • Steel reinforcement sits inside the seat where you cannot inspect it, so the one corrosion path in the bench is hidden
  • Polypropylene is not HDPE - a different polymer, with a shorter outdoor track record in furniture
  • The limited 2-year warranty is the real planning number, not the fade-free icon on the same page
  • Interior is only 14.9 in deep, so a tall stack of deep-seat cushions will not clear the lid

2. Most volume per dollar

Greesum 80 Gallon Storage Bench with Armrest

Greesum · Score 6.2/10

The most volume per dollar here, with armrests that make it read as furniture - and no published load rating, which is the gap you are paying less for.

Key specifications

  • 80 gallon stated capacity
  • Armrests, which most storage benches omit
  • Listing states lockable, waterproof and UV resistant
  • Resin panel construction, flat-packed

How it scores

What works

  • Ten more gallons than the Keter for less money, which is a real difference at four-seat-set scale
  • Armrests change how the bench sits in a seating group - it stops looking like a box with a lid
  • Lockable hasp, which stops a lid blowing open more often than it stops a theft

The trade-offs

  • No seat weight rating is published anywhere we could find, which is the number you most want on a bench
  • Waterproof on a storage bench is a marketing word; every vented box lets some driving rain in
  • No warranty term stated on the listing
  • Generic resin rather than a named polymer, so there is nothing to compare against HDPE

Suncast Elements 2-Seat Dining Bench with Storage

3. A bench at the table

Suncast Elements 2-Seat Dining Bench with Storage

Suncast · Score 6.5/10

The only pick here built at dining height, which matters more than capacity if the bench is going to live at a table.

Key specifications

  • 30 gallon stated hidden storage under the seat
  • Dining-height two-seat bench rather than a deck-box profile
  • Resin construction
  • Suncast states its products are made in the USA from domestically sourced resin

How it scores

What works

  • Dining height is the whole point: a deck-box bench is too low to eat at and this is not
  • Two seats at a table plus storage for the things that belong at a table - placemats, citronella, a folded cover
  • Suncast publishes a first-party US manufacturing statement, which is rare in this category
  • 30 gallons is the right size for the kit you actually want within reach

The trade-offs

  • 30 gallons will not hold a set of deep-seat cushions - this is table storage, not winter storage
  • No seat load rating published on the listing
  • A bench at a table gets rained on from above and splashed from below, so the lid seam sees more water here than on a wall-sited box
  • No warranty term stated on the listing

Suncast Outdoor Wicker Love Seat with 23 Gallon Storage

4. The one you will sit on longest

Suncast Outdoor Wicker Love Seat with 23 Gallon Storage

Suncast · Score 6.3/10

The one on this list designed as a seat first: a contoured back you can sit against for an hour, with storage as the bonus rather than the point.

Key specifications

  • 23 gallon stated storage capacity
  • Molded wicker-texture resin, listed as seating two
  • Contoured back, described on the listing as ergonomic back support
  • Listing states made in the USA

What works

  • A shaped back is the difference between a bench you sit on and a bench you sit against
  • Reads as part of a woven seating set rather than as storage parked beside one
  • Smallest footprint here, which suits a balcony or a narrow deck run
  • Suncast states US manufacturing with domestically sourced resin on its own site

The trade-offs

  • 23 gallons is the least storage here by a wide margin - a cover and a few tools, not cushions
  • Molded wicker texture holds dirt in the pattern and needs a brush rather than a wipe
  • No seat load rating or warranty term published on the listing
  • Wicker-look resin and a real HDPE weave age differently, so it will not match a woven set forever

Tangkula 45 Gallon Outdoor Storage Bench

5. Keeping stored fabric clean

Tangkula 45 Gallon Outdoor Storage Bench

Tangkula · Score 6.0/10

The one with a zippered liner and a gas strut, which are the two details that separate a storage bench from a box with a hinge.

Key specifications

  • Acacia wood top lid over a woven rattan-look body
  • Removable zippered inner liner

What works

  • Gas strut means the lid stays where you put it - the failure that hurts people on cheap boxes
  • Wood lid and woven body sit comfortably beside an acacia or wicker set
  • Smallest and lightest here, so one person can reposition it

The trade-offs

  • Acacia needs oiling or it silvers, so this is the only pick that asks for maintenance
  • A liner is not drainage: water that gets in sits in a fabric bag rather than running out
  • 45 gallons is a cover and a cushion or two, not a full set worth of soft goods
  • Gas struts are a wear part and are rarely sold as spares

Common questions

Can you sit on an outdoor storage bench?
On the ones that publish a seat load rating, yes - Keter states 551 lb and two to three people for the Solana 70 gallon. Most storage benches publish no rating at all, which tells you they are deck boxes with a flat lid rather than braced seating. A seat with no rating will flex in the middle, and flexing is what breaks the hinge line and the lid supports.
How much do outdoor storage benches hold?
Usefully less than the gallon figure suggests, because interior depth limits what fits before volume does. The Keter Solana is 70 gallons but 14.9 inches deep inside, which is shallower than a folded deep-seat back cushion. A bench realistically holds a folded cover, seat pads laid flat, throw pillows, towels, tools and the cushions off a bistro set. For a full seating set's cushions you want a 130 to 150 gallon deck box instead.
Are outdoor storage benches waterproof?
No, and the good ones say so. Keter specifies built-in ventilation on the Solana and describes its resin storage as UV-resistant and ventilated without ever claiming waterproof. That is deliberate: a sealed box in the sun condenses moisture on the underside of the lid overnight and drips it back inside. Treat a storage bench as a shaded, ventilated, raised shelf, load it dry, and leave an air gap.
What is the most durable material for an outdoor storage bench?
HDPE poly lumber, but almost nobody builds a storage bench out of it - the category is resin and wood. HDPE carries its color and UV inhibitors compounded through the material rather than coated on, so it does not chalk or peel. If longevity is the priority, the honest answer is to buy a poly lumber bench and a separate resin deck box rather than one object that compromises on both.
Is there steel inside a resin storage bench?
Often, and it is how the load ratings are achieved. Keter gives the Solana's material as steel-reinforced polypropylene. The reinforcement is good engineering, but it also means the only corrodible component is sealed inside the seat where you cannot inspect or treat it. Keep the drain path clear, do not let the interior stand in water, and plan around the published 2-year warranty rather than the no-rust marketing copy.
Storage bench or deck box - which should I buy?
Buy the bench if the footprint has to earn its place as seating in a seating group, and buy the box if the job is storage. Benches trade volume for a usable seat height; a 70 or 80 gallon bench is the top of this category while deck boxes run to 150 gallons for similar money. If both matter, the lowest-compromise answer is a separate poly lumber bench plus a deck box.
