Can patio furniture cushions get wet?

The fabric almost always survives. Whether the cushion does is decided by what is inside it.

The short answer

Yes — proper outdoor cushions are designed to get wet, and a shower will not harm them. What harms them is staying wet, and that is decided by the fill rather than the fabric. A cushion filled with reticulated open-cell foam passes water straight through and dries in hours. A cushion filled with ordinary polyurethane foam or polyester fiberfill soaks it up and holds it in the core for days, which is how mildew starts. So the practical question is not whether your cushions can get wet; it is whether they can dry.

The fill is the answer

How each fill handles water

FillWhat happens when wetDry timeVerdict
Reticulated (open-cell) foamWater passes through the interconnected cellsHoursWhat proper outdoor cushions use
Closed-cell foamResists absorption; water mostly stays on the surfaceHoursFirm, durable, common in marine use
Standard polyurethane foamSoaks like a sponge and holds water in the coreDays, if at allIndoor foam outdoors. The usual culprit
Polyester fiberfillWets through, compresses, mats permanentlyDaysLoses loft and does not recover
Wrapped foam (foam in a fiber wrap)The wrap holds water against the foamDaysComfortable dry, slow to recover wet

Drainage design matters as much as the foam itself: mesh panels on the underside of a cushion let water leave, and a fully sealed cover traps whatever got in at the zipper.

Once the core stays damp you have warmth, moisture and an organic food source in a dark enclosed space. Fungal growth needs moisture and substrate, and although the foam itself is synthetic, body oils, pollen, sunscreen and food residue supply the substrate perfectly well. That is the musty smell, and once it is in the core it is not really recoverable. The lifespan picture is on how long outdoor cushions last.

Fabric: repellent, not waterproof

Outdoor cushion fabric is almost never waterproof, and that is deliberate. Solution-dyed acrylic is water repellent — the weave sheds a shower and the fiber does not absorb much — but it is designed to breathe so the cushion can dry. The manufacturer's own description of the fabric is built around that, and the warranty is written against fade rather than water ingress for exactly this reason.

A genuinely waterproof cushion cover is usually a mistake. Water gets in at the zipper and the seams no matter what the panel is made of, and then it cannot get out. A breathable cover that lets the core dry beats a waterproof one that seals the core wet.

Two practical notes on the fabric side:

  • Repellency wears off and can be renewed. The factory finish on acrylic fabric is a surface treatment; a fabric guard made for outdoor fabric restores beading after a few seasons. It does nothing for fade.
  • Zippers are the entry point. Point them downward or toward the back when you fit the cushions, so running water does not sit on them.

Rescuing a soaked cushion

Worth attempting if the cushion is otherwise sound. The sequence:

  1. Get the water out mechanically first. Stand the cushion on edge and press firmly from the top down, repeatedly. Squeezing out most of the water does more than hours of air drying.
  2. Stand it on edge in moving air, not flat in the sun. Flat on a chair, the underside never dries. On edge, both faces are exposed and gravity helps.
  3. Unzip the cover if it is removable and dry the core separately. This is the step that actually works, and it is the reason removable covers are worth paying for.
  4. If it smells once dry, clean it and dry it again. A mild detergent solution, rinsed thoroughly — the method is on our cleaning guide.
  5. If the smell returns within days, replace it. The mildew is in the foam, not the cover, and nothing you apply reaches it. Sizing a replacement set is covered in our replacement cushion guide.

Habits that prevent it

  • Stand them on edge after rain. Ten seconds, and it is most of the benefit available.
  • Cover the set rather than carrying cushions in and out. A cover over the whole arrangement is a habit people actually keep — just make sure it vents, and see what a water-resistant cover claims.
  • Clean them before storage, not after. Stored dirt is stored mildew food.
  • Bring them in for winter. Months of freeze-thaw in a wet core finishes a cushion — see winter storage.
  • Or buy furniture that needs none. If the cushion cycle is what you are tired of, cushion-free furniture removes the problem entirely.

Common questions

Can outdoor cushions get wet?
Yes - cushions made for outdoor use are designed to be rained on and a shower will not harm them. The problem is staying wet. If the fill is reticulated open-cell foam, water passes through and the cushion dries in hours. If it is ordinary polyurethane foam or polyester fiberfill, it soaks and holds water in the core for days, which is where mildew starts.
What happens if patio cushions get soaked?
If the fill drains, nothing - they dry out and recover. If it does not, the water sits in the core where body oils, pollen and food residue give mold something to grow on, and you get a musty smell that keeps coming back. Press the water out mechanically, stand the cushion on edge in moving air, and unzip the cover to dry the core separately.
Are outdoor cushions waterproof?
Almost never, and deliberately so. Solution-dyed acrylic is water repellent - it sheds a shower and does not absorb much - but it is woven to breathe so the cushion can dry. A fully waterproof cover is usually worse, because water still gets in at the zipper and seams and then has no way out.
How do you dry outdoor cushions fast?
Press the water out first: stand the cushion on edge and squeeze firmly from the top down, repeatedly. That removes more water than hours of air drying. Then leave it on edge in moving air rather than flat in the sun, so both faces are exposed. If the cover unzips, remove it and dry the core separately.
Should you leave patio cushions out in the rain?
You can, if they have a draining fill and you stand them on edge afterwards. But cushions are the shortest-lived part of a patio set, and the simplest way to extend them is a cover over the whole arrangement so they are not rained on in the first place. The one thing never to do is put a wet cushion into a deck box or under a sealed cover.
