The best deck boxes

A deck box is ventilated, not waterproof. Everything that goes wrong with one starts there.

Quick picks

Ranked on the things that decide whether a box is still useful in year five: wall thickness, how it handles the water that gets in, and whether the lid is rated to sit on.

The best deck box for most decks is the LIFETIME 130 Gallon Heavy Duty box, because it is high-density polyethylene rather than generic resin and the wall sections are visibly thicker than the budget boxes at the same capacity. Before you choose any of them, though, there is one fact that reframes the whole category: a deck box is a ventilated container, not a waterproof one. Keter's own product pages call their boxes UV-resistant and ventilated and never use the word waterproof. Plan around that and a deck box works for a decade. Assume it is a sealed chest and your cushions mildew in it.

The short answer

A deck box does three jobs, and only the first two are the ones people buy it for:

  • It keeps cushions out of direct UV, which is the single biggest cause of cushion death. This it does perfectly.
  • It keeps cushions out of falling rain and off a wet deck. This it does well.
  • It does not keep humidity out. It is not designed to, which is why every reputable one is vented. Shut damp cushions in it and you have built a mildew chamber with a lid.

So the right mental model is a shaded, ventilated, raised shelf — not a dry box. Everything in the criteria section below follows from that. The same reasoning drives our cushions and water page, where the fill, not the fabric, turns out to be what actually fails.

Ventilated, not waterproof

This is worth being precise about because the listings are not. Deck box marketing routinely pairs "weather resistant", "water resistant" and occasionally "waterproof" in the same bullet list, and the three mean quite different things outdoors. Keter's specification page is the clearest first-party example we could find: it lists the material as resin, states "Weather Resistant: Yes", describes the box as ventilated and says it will not rot, rust or peel — and it never claims the box is waterproof anywhere on the page.

That is honest engineering rather than a shortcoming. A genuinely sealed box left in the sun becomes a humidity trap: every item inside gives up moisture, the air warms, and the moisture condenses on the inside of the lid overnight and drips back down. Vents stop that. The cost is that driving rain finds its way past a lid seam, which is why the floors of good boxes are ribbed and drain rather than flat.

What a gallon rating really buys

Deck boxes are sold in gallons, which is a liquid measure applied to a box you fill with awkward rectangles. The conversion that matters is roughly: a standard deep-seat outdoor cushion set — seat plus back — eats 25 to 35 gallons per seat once you account for the air you cannot squash out of foam.

Stated capacity against what it actually holds

Stated capacityRealistic contentsFootprint on a deckWho it suits
50 to 75 gallonsCushions for a two-seat bistro set, or a folded cover and a few toolsSmall; sits against a wall or railBalconies and small decks
90 to 110 gallonsCushions off a four-seat set, with room for one coverBench-sized, usually seat-ratedThe common right answer
120 to 150 gallonsCushions off a full sectional, or a sectional's cushions plus coversLarge; reads as furniture, not storageSectionals and deep-seat sets
180 gallons and upA whole set's soft goods plus pool or garden kitDominates a small deckBig decks and pool surrounds only

Stated capacity is the internal volume, not the usable volume. Hinge hardware, lid pistons and any internal shelf take some of it back, and foam does not fill a box the way water does.

The practical rule: buy one size up from the number you calculated. Nobody has ever regretted the spare volume, and a box you can close without compressing the cushions is a box whose vents still work. If what you are storing is specifically the cushions off a sectional, our cushion roundup covers how much soft goods a deep-seat set actually generates.

What actually decides a deck box

In rough order of how much it matters once the box is on your deck:

  • 1. Wall thickness, which you buy by proxy. Nobody publishes it. The usable proxies are shipping weight for a given capacity, and whether the brand names the polymer. HDPE named outright is a better signal than "resin", for the same reason it is on our poly lumber reference page: HDPE is a specific material and resin is a category.
  • 2. The floor. A ribbed floor that lifts contents off the base and lets water run to a corner is worth more than any lid seal. A flat floor puts the bottom cushion in whatever gets in.
  • 3. Lid support. Gas pistons or a stay that holds the lid open are not a luxury — a heavy lid that drops is the injury in this category, and the one part most likely to fail first. A lid rated as a seat also tells you something about the frame under it.
  • 4. Vents, and where they are. High vents near the lid line move air without letting rain run in. Vents low on a wall do the opposite.
  • 5. Assembly method. These ship flat and clip together. Clipped panels are why cheap boxes bow when loaded; look for boxes whose panels also screw.
  • 6. Lockability. Most boxes take a padlock through a molded hasp. That stops a lid blowing open far more often than it stops a theft, which is the real reason to want it.

The empty-box problem

A deck box is a large, light, hollow object with a lid, which is a description of a kite. Full, it is fine. Empty — in spring after you have taken the cushions indoors, or on the day it arrives — it is the thing on your deck most likely to move in a storm, and a 150 gallon box moving across a deck takes furniture with it.

Three fixes, cheapest first: store it loaded rather than empty; put a couple of pavers inside over winter if you have emptied it; or site it in a corner where two walls stop it traveling. The same weight-and-geometry reasoning covers the rest of the deck in how to protect patio furniture from wind.

What to avoid

  • Wooden deck boxes, unless you want the maintenance. A wooden box sits on a wet deck, holds water in its base and has end grain at every corner. Everything on how long wooden outdoor furniture lasts applies, with the added problem that the inside never sees sun and dries slowly.
  • Fabric or "pop-up" storage bags. They work for one season and then the zip and the UV-exposed seams go.
  • Boxes with a steel frame under a resin skin. The skin hides a rust path and you cannot inspect it — the mechanism is the one on rust and weld failures.
  • Dark colors in a high-sun climate, which cook the contents and raise the internal humidity swing. The same argument as hot-weather furniture.
  • Any box as a substitute for a cover on the furniture itself. They solve different problems; our covers roundup covers the other half.
  • A box bought as seating. A seat-rated lid is not the same thing as a comfortable seat height or a back to lean on. If the footprint has to earn its place in a seating group, read the storage bench roundup instead - only one bench in that category publishes a seat load rating at all.

LIFETIME Heavy Duty Outdoor Storage Deck Box 130 Gallon

1. Best overall

LIFETIME Heavy Duty Outdoor Storage Deck Box 130 Gallon

Lifetime · Score 7.8/10

High-density polyethylene rather than generic resin, from the one brand on this list that builds the rest of its catalog out of the same material.

Key specifications

  • 130 gallon stated capacity
  • High-density polyethylene construction
  • Heavy-duty lid
  • Flat-pack assembly

How it scores

Fade resistance
8.0
Rust and corrosion
9.5
Wind and stability
7.0
Build and hardware
8.0
Warranty strength
6.5

What works

  • HDPE is the material this whole site argues for, and it behaves the same in a storage box
  • Noticeably heavier wall sections than the budget boxes, so it stays put better
  • Lifetime publishes material and construction detail that most storage brands do not

The trade-offs

  • Costs more than a comparable resin box of the same capacity
  • Heavier to reposition once it is assembled, and it has no wheels
  • Listings often quote a shipping lead time rather than same-week delivery

Keter Signature Collection 150 Gallon Resin Deck Box for Outdoor Cushions

2. Biggest usable capacity

Keter Signature Collection 150 Gallon Resin Deck Box for Outdoor Cushions

Keter · Score 7.3/10

The default large resin deck box: enough volume for a full set of cushions, a lid you can sit on, and a warranty that is much shorter than the marketing.

Key specifications

  • 150 gallon stated capacity
  • Resin construction with a wood-panel texture
  • Lid rated as seating on the manufacturer listing
  • Ventilated rather than sealed

How it scores

Fade resistance
7.0
Rust and corrosion
9.5
Wind and stability
6.0
Build and hardware
7.0
Warranty strength
5.0

What works

  • 150 gallons genuinely swallows the cushions off a full seating set
  • Resin cannot rust, rot or peel, which removes the failure modes a wooden box has
  • Doubles as a bench, which is how most decks actually use the footprint
  • Flat-packs, so one person can get it through a gate

The trade-offs

  • Keter publishes a limited 2-year warranty, against a listing that advertises that it does not fade
  • Ventilated, not waterproof - driving rain gets in and the floor has to drain
  • Light when empty, so it moves in a storm unless it is loaded or anchored
  • Panel clips are the part people report failing, and they are not sold separately

Suncast 73 Gal Resin Deck Box with Wheels

3. The one you will actually move

Suncast 73 Gal Resin Deck Box with Wheels

Suncast · Score 6.8/10

The one deck box design that solves the problem every other deck box creates: a loaded box is immovable, unless it has wheels.

Key specifications

  • 73 gallon stated capacity
  • Integrated wheels and handles
  • Lid listed as seat-capable
  • Resin construction

How it scores

Fade resistance
6.5
Rust and corrosion
9.5
Wind and stability

What works

  • Wheels mean you can actually move it to sweep, which nobody does with a static box
  • Smaller footprint suits a balcony or a narrow deck run
  • Loads and unloads at a sensible height

The trade-offs

  • 73 gallons is one seating group's cushions, not a whole set's
  • Wheels add a moving part at ground level, where grit collects
  • Warranty terms are not stated on the listing

Suncast 99 Gallon Wicker Horizontal Outdoor Deck Box

4. Matching a wicker set

Suncast 99 Gallon Wicker Horizontal Outdoor Deck Box

Suncast · Score 6.7/10

A wicker-textured resin box for anyone matching a woven seating set, with the same caveat every textured box carries: the texture is molded, not woven.

Key specifications

  • 99 gallon stated capacity
  • Resin construction with a molded wicker texture
  • Hinged lid
  • Horizontal format

How it scores

Fade resistance
6.5
Rust and corrosion
9.5
Wind and stability
5.5
Build and hardware
6.5
Warranty strength
4.5

What works

  • Reads as part of a wicker seating set rather than as a plastic box parked beside one
  • Molded texture cannot unravel the way a real woven strand does
  • Horizontal format fits under a window or a rail where a tall box will not

The trade-offs

  • Textured surfaces hold dirt in the pattern and need a brush rather than a wipe
  • Warranty terms are not stated on the listing
  • Wicker-look resin and real HDPE weave age differently, so it will not match forever

303 Aerospace Protectant

5. Keeping the finish

303 Aerospace Protectant

303 Products · Score 7.4/10

A UV screen for the materials that chalk — resin, vinyl, plastic and painted metal — rather than another cleaner.

Key specifications

  • UV-blocking protectant, not a cleaner
  • For resin, vinyl, plastic, fiberglass and painted surfaces
  • Wipe on, buff off
  • Reapply seasonally

How it scores

Fade resistance

What works

  • Targets the actual failure mode on plastics: UV chalking and color loss
  • Leaves a dry, non-greasy finish that does not attract dust

The trade-offs

  • Does nothing for wood, and does not clean anything
  • Needs reapplying every few months in full sun to be worth doing

Common questions

Are deck boxes waterproof?
Almost none are, and the good ones say so. Keter's own product specification describes its resin boxes as UV-resistant and ventilated, states 'Weather Resistant: Yes' and never claims waterproof. That is deliberate: a sealed box in the sun becomes a humidity trap that condenses moisture on the underside of the lid overnight. Treat a deck box as a shaded, ventilated, raised shelf and load it dry.
What size deck box do I need for patio cushions?
Budget roughly 25 to 35 gallons per seat of deep-seat cushions, since foam cannot be compressed the way the gallon figure implies. That puts a four-seat set at around 90 to 110 gallons and a full sectional at 120 to 150. Then buy one size up: a box you can close without crushing the cushions is a box whose vents still work.
Will cushions get mildew in a deck box?
Only if you put them in damp or pack them solid. The box keeps UV and falling rain off, which is most of the job, but it cannot remove humidity - that is what the vents are for, and vents need an air path. Dry the cushions fully, leave about two inches of clearance under the lid and a gap at one end, and mildew stops being a problem.
How long does a resin deck box last?
Well past its warranty if it is kept out of constant direct sun, and the warranty is the honest planning number: Keter publishes a limited 2-year term on its outdoor storage even on pages carrying a 'Does Not Fade' icon. The failure mode is UV chalking of the surface and panel clips loosening, not structural collapse. An annual wipe with a UV protectant meaningfully slows the first one.
Can you sit on a deck box?
On the ones rated for it, which the better large boxes state explicitly - a seat rating is also a useful signal about the frame underneath. Do not assume it. A lid that is not seat-rated will bow, and bowing is what breaks the hinge line and the lid pistons, which are the first components to fail on any deck box.
