All-weather wicker

Wicker is a weave, not a material

This is the fact that makes the whole category confusing. Wicker describes a technique — weaving strands over a frame — and says nothing at all about what those strands are. Natural wicker is rattan, cane or willow. "All-weather wicker" is a synthetic strand, and which synthetic decides everything about how long the furniture lasts.

So "all-weather wicker sectional" in a product title tells you the shape and the construction method. It does not tell you whether the set will still be usable in eight years or brittle in three, and the listing frequently does not tell you either.

HDPE weave vs PVC weave

The frame underneath

Even a perfect weave is only as good as what it is woven over, and the frame is invisible in every product photograph. Aluminum frames cannot rust. Steel frames rust from every drilled hole and every weld, and on a wicker set that rust is hidden under the weave until it is structural.

This combination is why a premium wicker sectional and a budget one that look similar in photographs can differ by a decade of service:

• HDPE weave + aluminum frame: the genuine all-weather product, 8-12 years.
• HDPE weave + steel frame: weave outlives the frame. Odd but common.
• PVC weave + aluminum frame: frame outlives the weave. Re-weaving is not realistic.
• PVC weave + steel frame: the entry-price set. Three summers, honestly.

Telling them apart in a listing

• Look for "HDPE" by name. Brands that use it say so, because it costs more. "PE rattan" is ambiguous and often means the cheaper material.
• Check the frame line in the specifications. If it says only "metal frame," assume steel.
• Read the warranty. A one-year limited warranty on a wicker set tells you what the manufacturer expects.
• Look at the weight. Genuine HDPE weave over aluminum is a substantial object. A sectional light enough to carry one-handed is telling you something.
• Watch for glossy photographs. A very shiny weave in product shots is more often PVC than HDPE, which tends to be matte.

Caring for a resin weave

There is not much you can do, and it is worth knowing which small things help:

• Rinse the weave out. Grit sits in the weave and abrades strands against each other every time someone sits down. A hose does most of the work.
• Use a UV protectant. On resin this genuinely slows chalking, and it needs redoing every few months in full sun to matter at all.
• Cover it in the off-season. Fewer UV hours is the only real lever on weave life. Our cover picks apply here.
• Do not pressure-wash it. High pressure breaks strands and forces water into the frame tubes, where it sits.
