Durability
Is resin wicker durable?
Two products share the name. One lasts a decade, the other cracks in three summers.

Quick picks
Three synthetic-weave sets at three points on the disclosure scale - what a listing tells you turns out to predict the outcome better than anything about the weave itself.

Resin wicker is durable when the weave is HDPE and the frame is aluminum — that combination routinely gives a decade or more outside. It is not durable when the weave is PVC and the frame is powder-coated steel, which goes brittle and rusts in roughly three to five summers. Both are sold as "resin wicker" or "all-weather wicker", at prices that overlap, and the listing often names neither material. That ambiguity is the real answer to the question.
The short answer
"Resin" means plastic. It is not a specification — it is a category that covers polymers with completely different UV behavior. So the useful question is never "is resin wicker durable" but "which resin, over which frame". Two disclosures decide the outcome and everything else is secondary.
HDPE versus PVC weave
High-density polyethylene is the good one. It takes pigment and UV stabilizers compounded into the polymer before extrusion, it stays flexible across temperature swings, and when it finally degrades it fades rather than shatters. It is the same material family as the poly lumber on our HDPE reference page, drawn into a strand instead of pressed into a board.
PVC is the cheap one, and its failure mode is the problem. Polyvinyl chloride needs added plasticizers to stay pliable; UV and heat drive those plasticizers out over time, and the strand goes hard, then chalky, then snaps. You do not get a gradual decline you can live with — you get a sofa that looks acceptable and then starts breaking strands wherever weight lands.
The frame fails before the weave
On most synthetic wicker furniture the weave is not the first thing to go: the frame is. The weave hides it, which is what makes it expensive. Powder-coated steel inside a wicker sofa rusts from the inside of the tube outward, invisible under the weave, and announces itself when a leg folds or a joint shifts. By then re-weaving a frame that is failing is not worth doing.
Aluminum frames remove that failure entirely — aluminum's oxide layer is protective where iron oxide is not. This is why "aluminum frame" is the single most valuable phrase in a wicker listing, and why an unstated frame should be read as steel until the seller says otherwise. The same reasoning drives how long wicker furniture lasts.
Durability by configuration
Synthetic wicker outcomes by weave polymer and frame metal
| Weave | Frame | What fails first | Realistic outdoor life |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDPE, compounded color | Aluminum | Cushion fabric, long before anything structural | A decade or more with normal cleaning |
| HDPE, compounded color | Powder-coated steel | The frame, invisibly, from inside the tube | Weave outlives the furniture - five to eight years |
| PVC or unstated resin | Aluminum | Weave strands go brittle and snap | Three to five summers in full exposure |
| PVC or unstated resin | Powder-coated steel | Both, roughly together | Three summers, and the familiar complaint pattern |
| Natural rattan or cane | Any | The fiber itself, to moisture | Indoor and covered-porch use only |
Price overlaps heavily across the first four rows. A set is not in a better row because it cost more; it is in a better row because the listing names HDPE and aluminum.
Identifying what you are looking at
- Search the listing for "HDPE" or "polyethylene". Present means good news and a seller who knows it. Absent usually means PVC — a manufacturer using HDPE has a commercial reason to say so.
- Search for "aluminum". If the frame metal is unstated on a wicker set, assume steel.
- Look at the strand in a photo. HDPE strands are usually matte with consistent color through any cut edge. High-gloss, uniformly shiny strands are more often PVC, though this is a hint rather than proof.
- Flex a strand if the furniture is in front of you. HDPE gives and returns. Aged PVC feels stiff and sounds dry.
- Read the warranty for the word "frame". A frame warranty separate from the weave warranty tells you the maker knows which part they stand behind.
Making it last
Good synthetic wicker asks very little, and the little it asks matters:
- Rinse the weave, do not pressure-wash it. A pressure washer drives water into the frame tubes and can tear strands at the wrap points.
- Keep the frame drain holes clear. Steel-framed sets especially — a blocked drain hole is how water sits inside a leg all winter.
- Bring the cushions in, not the furniture. On an HDPE-over-aluminum set, the cushions are the consumable; the set itself is fine outside.
- Do not use a solvent cleaner on the weave. Soap and water, then a protectant if the strands look dull.
The longer treatment of the material itself, including what the weave does under load, is on our all-weather wicker page.
The picks in full
Each entry states what the product is, how it scores on our five criteria, what it gives up, and how the pick was made.
1. Durable resin wicker
Yardbird Harriet Outdoor Wicker Sectional
Yardbird · Score 8.7/10
The build most people mean when they say they want a patio set that lasts: aluminum frame, HDPE-based weave, performance fabric.
Key specifications
- Powder-coated aluminum frame
- HDPE-based all-weather wicker weave
- Performance fabric cushions
- 10-year frame warranty on premium pieces
How it scores
- Fade resistance
- 8.5
- Rust and corrosion
- 9.0
- Wind and stability
- 7.5
- Build and hardware
- 9.0
- Warranty strength
- 8.5
What works
- An aluminum frame cannot rust from the inside out the way a steel frame does
- HDPE weave is the only wicker type that survives real UV exposure
- Replacement cushions and parts are actually available
The trade-offs
- Premium pricing; this is a several-thousand-dollar category
- Cushions still need storing or covering off-season

2. Mid-market compromise
Christopher Knight Home 4-Piece Wicker Conversation Set
Christopher Knight Home · Score 5.4/10
The volume-selling budget sectional. Fine for a covered patio, and honest about its limits anywhere else.
Key specifications
- Resin wicker over a steel or aluminum frame depending on model
- Water-resistant polyester cushions
- Modular four-piece layout
- Limited 1-year warranty typical
How it scores
- Fade resistance
- 5.0
- Rust and corrosion
- 5.5
- Wind and stability
- 6.0
- Build and hardware
- 5.5
- Warranty strength
- 4.0
What works
- By far the cheapest way to fill a patio with matching seating
- Modular pieces move around easily
The trade-offs
- Check the frame: steel-framed versions rust where the coating chips
- Polyester cushions are water-resistant, not solution-dyed — they fade
- PVC-based weave on the cheapest variants goes brittle after two or three summers
