Aluminum vs wicker patio furniture
A trick question: the good wicker furniture is built on an aluminum frame.

Wicker is not a material, it is a weave — and on any outdoor furniture worth buying, that weave is wrapped around an aluminum frame. So the real comparison is not aluminum against wicker. It is bare aluminum against aluminum with a synthetic weave over it, and the weave is the part that wears out first.
Why this is a false choice
The confusion is worth clearing up because it changes what you look for in a listing. A piece of "all-weather wicker" furniture has two separate specifications:
- The frame, which carries the load and decides whether the furniture survives. Aluminum is the good answer; steel is the bad one.
- The weave polymer, which decides how it looks in year five. HDPE-based weave holds up under UV; PVC-based weave goes chalky and snaps.
Those two things are independent, and a listing can be excellent on one and terrible on the other. Our all-weather wicker page sets out the full hierarchy, and resin wicker vs PE wicker deals with the polymer naming specifically.
What the weave adds, and what it costs
Given that the good version of both sides is built on the same metal, the honest framing is: what does adding a weave buy you?
What it adds. A softer look that suits a lounge setting better than bare metal; a surface that does not get as hot in direct sun as exposed aluminum; and deep seating geometry that bare aluminum frames rarely achieve without cushions anyway.
What it costs. A second material with its own failure mode. The weave is exposed to UV with far more surface area than a frame tube, and when a strand goes brittle and snaps there is no repair — you cannot re-weave a panel at home. It also means cushions in practice, which adds a third consumable with its own lifespan.
Side by side
Bare aluminum vs aluminum-framed wicker
| Attribute | Bare aluminum | Wicker over aluminum |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | The aluminum is the furniture | Aluminum frame, hidden under the weave |
| Corrosion | Cannot rust | Cannot rust - if the frame really is aluminum |
| What fails first | Powder coat wear, then oxidation staining | The weave strands, from UV, well before the frame |
| Repairable? | Touch-up paint only | Weave: no. Frame: not the issue |
| Surface temperature in sun | Gets genuinely hot | Cooler to touch than bare metal |
| Cushions | Optional on contoured cast | Effectively required |
| Look | Clean, modern, obviously metal | Softer; reads as lounge furniture |
| Consumables over ten years | Touch-up paint | Cushions, plus the weave itself as the end point |
| Weight and wind | Cast is heavy; tube is not | Light for its size - a wind consideration |
Both columns assume an aluminum frame. Steel-framed wicker is a different product: it rusts from the fastener holes outward and the weave is then the least of your problems.
How to check the frame
Four checks, in the order they are worth doing:
- Read the specification block, not the title. Titles say "rattan" and "wicker" because those are search terms. Frame material lives further down, if anywhere.
- Use the shipping weight as a tell. A steel-framed set is noticeably heavier than the aluminum equivalent at the same size.
- Look for a frame warranty. A separate, longer warranty on the frame is a strong signal that the maker knows what the frame is made of. Yardbird publishes a ten-year frame warranty on premium pieces.
- Check whether a magnet sticks, once it arrives. Aluminum is not magnetic; steel is. It is the one test that cannot be marketed around.
How to choose
- Dining, full sun, no cushions wanted: bare cast aluminum, with shade.
- Lounge seating, deep seats, a softer look: wicker, with the frame confirmed as aluminum and the weave confirmed as HDPE-based.
- High-UV site: bare aluminum. The weave is the UV-sensitive part, and in Arizona or Florida it is the part that dates the furniture.
- Tight budget: bare aluminum beats cheap wicker, because cheap wicker means a steel frame and a PVC weave — two short-life components instead of one long-life one. The sectional alternatives are on our under-$1,000 page.
