Scores are our own, assessed from published specifications, warranty terms and owner-reported outcomes — not from laboratory testing. Prices are shown live on Amazon; we never print a figure we cannot verify.

They come out of the same factories

Most brand-versus-brand comparisons start by looking for differences. This one has to start somewhere else, because the single most useful fact about POLYWOOD versus Trex Outdoor Furniture is printed on Trex Outdoor Furniture's own About page: its products are manufactured and sold by POLYWOOD under a Trademark License Agreement with Trex Company, Inc. The same page names the two plants that build both lines — Syracuse, Indiana and Roxboro, North Carolina — and describes the material as Genuine POLYWOOD lumber.

Trex Company makes composite decking. It does not make this furniture. It licenses its name to the company that does. So when a shopper asks which brand is better built, the answer is that one company builds both, from one material, in two buildings.

That reframes the question usefully. You are not choosing between two manufacturers with different standards. You are choosing between two product lines from the same manufacturer, which differ in exactly three ways that matter: the shape of the furniture, the colors you can get it in, and what it costs on the day you buy.

The warranties are the same document

The clearest proof of the shared origin is the paperwork. Read the two residential warranties side by side and they are not merely similar — they are the same instrument with a different logo. POLYWOOD's limited residential warranty names Poly-Wood, LLC as warrantor and covers the lumber for twenty years of residential use against splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling, rot and structural damage from insect infestation. The Trex Outdoor Furniture warranty names the same warrantor, the same twenty years and the same six failure modes in the same order.

Read from each brand's own published warranty page on October 8, 2026. Commercial use is excluded from both.

There is one line in that document worth reading closely before you buy either brand, and it is the same line in both. The twenty-year lumber warranty covers structural failure — splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling, rot. It does not cover fading or color change, which POLYWOOD lists under exclusions alongside normal weathering.

Where the specifications differ

Hardly at all, and the numbers are worth seeing precisely because they are so close. Take the flagship Adirondack from each line — POLYWOOD's Classic and the Trex Cape Cod, the two chairs most often put head to head.

Figures quoted from each brand's own product page on October 8, 2026. Half a pound of chair weight and four tenths of an inch of seat height are manufacturing variation, not a design difference.

Half a pound apart on weight. Identical on seat width and capacity. The same lumber, by both brands' own description — POLYWOOD states its lumber is 100% HDPE with UV inhibitors and pigments compounded through the material, and Trex Outdoor Furniture describes its products as built from that same lumber in a 99% waste-free process.

What genuinely differs is the drawing. POLYWOOD's Classic is the traditional Adirondack silhouette: curved back, rounded slat ends, a deep recline. The Cape Cod reads squarer and flatter, with straighter slats and a more upright stance. Neither is better. One looks like a lake house and the other looks like a modern deck, and that is a legitimate reason to pick a side.

Collection depth

The other practical difference is range. POLYWOOD sells a markedly broader catalog — Adirondacks, rockers, gliders, dining in several table shapes, deep seating, chaises, bar and counter height, benches and swings, across multiple collections. Trex Outdoor Furniture is a narrower line built around a handful of collections.

That matters if you intend to add pieces later. Matching a POLYWOOD color across a chair bought this year and a bench bought in three years is easier simply because more things exist in it. If you want one pair of chairs and nothing else, range is irrelevant.

Color range: the real gap

This is the one specification where the difference is large and verifiable. The POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack product page lists 24 color options across three families — three POLYWOOD Select finishes, sixteen Heritage solids and three Vintage tones. The Trex Cape Cod Adirondack page lists eleven: Sand Castle, Stepping Stone, Charcoal Black, Classic White, Tree House, Vintage Lantern, Rainforest Canopy, Sunset Red, Aruba, Lime and Pacific Blue.

Eleven is plenty for most decks. It stops being plenty the moment you are matching something — siding, a railing, an existing set, a color somebody else in the house has already decided on. Because color in poly lumber is compounded through the material rather than painted on, you cannot change your mind later with a can of anything; painting it also voids the warranty on both lines. The color you order is the color you own for twenty years, so the size of the menu is a real purchase criterion here in a way it is not for powder-coated aluminum.

Price, and why we will not print one

Price is the third real variable and the one that moves. Both brands sell direct, both appear on Amazon and at the big home centers, and both run periodic promotions — POLYWOOD's own store was carrying a named seasonal sale when we checked it on October 8, 2026, with free standard delivery in the contiguous US as a standing offer rather than a sale term. The Trex Outdoor Furniture store advertises the same free standard shipping and its 20-year warranty, and carried no clearance or percentage-off section at all.

Which means neither brand has a stable price we could usefully quote, and a number printed in an article is wrong within weeks. The buy buttons on this page show the live Amazon price where we have it and send you to check it where we do not. Our advice is mechanical: decide which shape you want, then price the matched pair on the day, then buy whichever is cheaper. You are not trading quality for money, because the lumber, the hardware grade and the warranty are the same on both sides of that choice.

For a wider view of how these two sit against the rest of the category, including the Amish-built brands that use heavier stock, see our brand-by-brand breakdown of HDPE makers and the HDPE Adirondack roundup.

How to choose between them

  1. Pick the silhouette. Traditional curve, or square and flat. This is the only difference you will notice every day for twenty years.
  2. Check the color exists. If you need a particular tone, POLYWOOD's 24 options are roughly twice the Trex menu on the equivalent chair. Order a sample chip rather than trusting a screen.
  3. Decide whether you will add pieces. If yes, the broader POLYWOOD catalog makes matching easier in three years.
  4. Then compare price on the day, including delivery. Both lines ship free in the contiguous US from their own stores; marketplace pricing moves independently.
  5. Ignore every claim that one is better made. Same company, same plants, same lumber, same warranty document.

One case where the choice genuinely is not a coin flip: if what you want is a bigger chair than either flagship, neither of these is the pick. POLYWOOD's Grand pattern is published at more than double the capacity of the Classic, and we cover it on the heavy-duty roundup and on the page for tall frames.

If the brand you are weighing against POLYWOOD is not Trex but one of the Amish-built makers, the comparison changes shape entirely: it becomes a question of published warranty and distribution rather than silhouette. POLYWOOD vs Berlin Gardens is that version of the argument.

POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack Chair

1. The widest color range

POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack Chair

POLYWOOD · Score 9.3/10

The reference HDPE Adirondack: color compounded through the lumber, a 20-year residential warranty, and nothing on it to rust or splinter.

Key specifications

  • 100% HDPE lumber, color and UV inhibitors compounded through the material
  • Marine-grade stainless hardware
  • 20-year residential lumber warranty
  • Arrives flat-packed; bolt-together assembly

How it scores

Fade resistance
9.5
Rust and corrosion
9.5
Wind and stability
8.5
Build and hardware
9.0
Warranty strength
9.5

What works

  • Fade behavior is a material property here, not a surface coat that can wear off
  • Warranty language explicitly covers splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling and rot
  • Heavy enough to stay put on a gusty evening
  • Washes clean with soap and water — no sealing, oiling or refinishing, ever

The trade-offs

  • Costs multiples of a big-box resin chair, and the value only shows up over years
  • Heavy to move around a deck on your own
  • Sanding it voids the warranty, so deep scratches stay

Common questions

Is Trex Outdoor Furniture the same as POLYWOOD?
Effectively yes. Trex Outdoor Furniture's own About page states that its products are manufactured and sold by POLYWOOD under a Trademark License Agreement with Trex Company, Inc., built from Genuine POLYWOOD lumber in the same two plants in Syracuse, Indiana and Roxboro, North Carolina. Trex Company makes composite decking; it licenses its name for the furniture rather than building it.
Which has the better warranty, POLYWOOD or Trex Outdoor Furniture?
Neither. Both published residential warranties name Poly-Wood, LLC as the warrantor and give twenty years on the lumber against splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling, rot and structural insect damage, with five years on metal frames, powder coat, hardware and woven inserts, three years on sling fabric and thirty days of workmanship coverage on cushions and umbrellas. They are the same document with a different logo.
Is POLYWOOD or Trex furniture stronger?
The flagship Adirondacks are both published at a 300 lb weight capacity and are within half a pound of each other in chair weight, built from the same HDPE lumber. If you need a materially higher capacity, the difference to look for is inside POLYWOOD's own range rather than between the two brands: the Grand Adirondack pattern is published at 650 lb against the Classic's 300 lb.
Does POLYWOOD come in more colors than Trex?
Yes, and it is the largest verifiable gap between the lines. POLYWOOD's Classic Adirondack page lists 24 color options across its Select, Heritage and Vintage families; the equivalent Trex Cape Cod Adirondack page lists 11. Because color is compounded through poly lumber rather than coated on, and painting voids both warranties, the color you order is permanent.
Which should I buy if price is the only thing I care about?
Whichever matched pair is cheaper on the day you buy, including delivery. Since the lumber, hardware and warranty are identical, buying the cheaper of the two costs you nothing in durability. Both brands run periodic promotions and both offer free standard shipping in the contiguous US from their own stores, so check the live price rather than trusting a figure published in any article.
