The category error
"HDPE vs POLYWOOD" is a comparison between a material and a company that makes things out of it. It is the same shape of question as "stainless steel vs All-Clad" or "cotton vs Levi's." POLYWOOD states directly that its lumber is 100% HDPE with UV inhibitors and pigments compounded in.
The confusion is understandable. POLYWOOD dominates the category so completely that its brand name has started working like a material name, the way people say Kleenex or Dumpster. Retailer listings make it worse by writing "POLYWOOD-style" or "poly wood material" in titles for products that have nothing to do with the company.

How to compare poly lumber properly
Once the question is framed as brand versus brand, five things actually differentiate them:
- Warranty length and wording. Twenty years versus twelve is a real difference, and wording that names specific failure modes is worth more than a longer bare number.
- Board thickness and weight. Heavier stock resists flex and stays put in wind. Some Amish-built brands use noticeably thicker lumber than the volume brands.
- Hardware. Marine-grade stainless throughout is the standard to want. Check whether it says "stainless" or just "rust-resistant."
- Design and ergonomics. Seat angle, back height and arm width vary a lot. These are genuinely different chairs to sit in.
- Availability and parts. The volume brands are easier to match, extend and get replacement hardware for years later.
Are unbranded poly chairs the same?
Sometimes, and sometimes not — and the gap between the two cases is large.
Genuine unbranded HDPE lumber made by a smaller manufacturer can be excellent and is usually cheaper. What you give up is the written warranty, replacement parts in year eight, and any way to verify the feedstock.
The thing to watch for is a different product wearing similar language. Blow-molded polyethylene shell chairs are hollow, lighter, usually mounted on a steel frame, and typically warranted two to five years. They are a legitimate budget product — we recommend one on our alternatives page — but they are not poly lumber and should not be priced as if they were.
Three checks that separate them:
- Weight. Solid lumber is heavy. Hollow shells are not.
- Warranty. 12-20 years means lumber. 2-5 years means a shell.
- Frame. If there is a steel frame mentioned, it is not solid lumber.
