The best heavy-duty patio furniture
Most brands never publish a weight rating. These are the pieces that do, and what the number is worth once you have it.

How this page is funded: Deck & Dusk earns a commission when you buy through the Amazon links below, at no extra cost to you. Commission never decides a ranking — our picks and our criteria are set before any link is added. Read the full disclosure.
Quick picks
Ranked by what the maker publishes, not by how solid the photographs look. Where a capacity figure does not exist we say so rather than inventing one.

What heavy duty actually means
"Heavy duty" is the least regulated phrase in this category. It appears in listing titles for chairs that weigh nine pounds. It gets applied to a powder-coated steel frame and to solid poly lumber with equal confidence. Nothing about it is defined, and nobody is checking.
There is a number that is defined, though, and a small number of makers publish it: the static weight capacity of the seat. That figure is the spine of this page. Every pick below either has a published capacity we read off the manufacturer's own product page, or it does not — and where it does not, we say so instead of guessing.
Two things are worth knowing before the numbers start. First, a capacity figure is a structural limit, not a comfort rating; a chair rated to 400 lb can still have a seat too narrow to sit in comfortably, which is why seat width sits alongside capacity in the table below. Second, the figure means much more when a test standard is named next to it. highwood publishes both — it states its folding Adirondack is load-tested per ASTM F1858-98 (2008), the standard for outdoor reclining plastic furniture, and its rocker to ASTM 1561-03 (2008) for outdoor plastic furniture. Most brands print a number and leave it at that.
The five things we checked
- Published static capacity. Read from the maker's own product page on the exact configuration, not from a retailer's summary and not from a different model in the same collection.
- Whether a test standard is named. An ASTM reference means somebody loaded the chair. No reference means the figure is the manufacturer's own claim.
- Seat width. A high rating on an 18-inch seat solves the wrong problem. We quote the published seat width for every pick.
- Hardware grade. Fastener failure is the quiet way heavy use ends a chair. Marine-grade stainless is the standard to want; 316 over 304 matters near salt water.
- What the warranty covers. Twenty years on lumber against cracking is worth more under load than two years on a shell. POLYWOOD's residential terms name the failure modes explicitly; most budget warranties do not.
We did not test any of these ourselves, and the page says so in the same words it uses everywhere else on this site. Every figure here came off a manufacturer page we read on October 8, 2026, and how we work is written out in full.
Published capacity, side by side
Weight capacity as published by the maker, October 8, 2026
| Piece | Published capacity | Seat width | Test standard named | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| highwood King Hamilton folding Adirondack | 400 lb | 22.25 in | ASTM F1858-98 (2008) | 12 years |
| highwood Lehigh rocker | 400 lb | 23.25 in | ASTM 1561-03 (2008) | 12 years |
| POLYWOOD Nautical chaise, with wheels | 400 lb | 21 in | No | 20 years, lumber |
| POLYWOOD Nautical chaise, no wheels | 300 lb | 21 in | No | 20 years, lumber |
| POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack | 300 lb | 20 in | No | 20 years, lumber |
| Trex Cape Cod Adirondack | 300 lb residential | 20 in | No | 20 years, lumber |
| POLYWOOD Nautical dining chair | 300 lb | 20.5 in | No | 20 years, lumber |
| POLYWOOD Oxford deep seating sofa | 300 lb per seat | 69 in bench | No | 20 years, lumber |
| Lifetime molded Adirondack | 300 lb | 20.75 in | No | 2 years |
| Tangkula cast aluminum dining set | Not published | Not published | No | Not published |
Every figure quoted from the manufacturer's own product page except the Lifetime chair, read from a dealer specification sheet. Blank entries mean no figure is published — not that the piece is weak.
Two patterns fall out of that table. The first is that 300 lb is the default for a single-person outdoor chair across every price tier, from a molded budget chair to twenty-year poly lumber. If you need more than 300 lb, the shortlist is small and it is not organized by price.
The second is that the extra capacity and the long warranty come from different brands. highwood publishes the highest rating you can order on Amazon today and backs it with a named ASTM test, but its residential warranty is twelve years. POLYWOOD and Trex give twenty years on the lumber but rate their flagship chairs at 300 lb. There is no piece in this list that is top of both columns.
Dining and deep seating above 300 lb
Here is where the search gets harder, and it is worth knowing before you spend an evening on it. Every dining chair and deep-seating piece we could find a published figure for lands at 300 lb per seat — POLYWOOD's Nautical dining chair and its Oxford sofa both. There is no 400 lb dining chair in this category the way there is a 400 lb Adirondack, and there is no 650 lb equivalent of the Grand pattern in a dining set.
Two things follow from that. First, read "per seat" carefully on bench-style pieces: the Oxford sofa's 300 lb per seat across three seats is a different claim from 300 lb for the sofa, and the per-seat reading is the one that constrains a single user. Second, if you need more than 300 lb at a table, the practical answer is usually to buy the table and seat it with armchairs rated higher rather than to accept the matching dining chairs — which is less tidy than a set, and it works. A bench is the other option, and benches tend to publish nothing at all, so judge those on frame and weight.
Capacity is published per SKU, not per brand
This is the single most useful thing we learned building the table, and it will save you a bad order. The same chaise, in the same collection, from the same maker, carries two different published figures depending on one option.
POLYWOOD's Nautical chaise with arms is weight tested to 300 lb. Add wheels and the otherwise identical chaise is tested to 400 lb. One pound of difference in product weight, a hundred pounds of difference in the published rating.
The same discipline applies within a single collection. POLYWOOD's Nautical dining chair is published at 300 lb, and its Oxford deep seating sofa at 300 lb per seat — which on a three-seat sofa is a different claim from 300 lb for the piece, and worth reading carefully if more than one person sits on it at once.
The highest-capacity chair we cannot link
The highest published single-seat figure we found anywhere in this category is not in the table above, because you cannot buy it on Amazon.
POLYWOOD's Grand Adirondack pattern — the Vineyard Grand and the Nautical Grand are the same frame in two styles — is published at a 650 lb weight capacity with a 24-inch seat width and a 57.3 lb chair weight. The Nautical Grand publishes the same 650 lb figure at 57.5 lb, which tells you the rating belongs to the Grand frame rather than one collection's styling. It carries the same 20-year lumber warranty and the same 18-8 marine-grade stainless fasteners as the Classic.
That is more than double the capacity of the Classic Adirondack, on four more inches of seat width, with no warranty penalty. We checked for it on Amazon on October 8, 2026 and found only the standard Vineyard Adirondack, not the Grand — so there is no honest buy link for us to give you, and we would rather tell you the chair exists than pretend the 400 lb pick is the ceiling. Buy it from POLYWOOD directly or from a furniture dealer that carries the line.
When no figure is published
Most patio furniture has no published capacity at all, and that includes plenty of perfectly solid metal furniture. The cast aluminum dining set in this list is an example: there is no load rating to quote, so it has to be judged on what you can see.
Four substitutes for a missing number, in order of usefulness:
- Frame material, stated explicitly. Cast aluminum is poured solid and fails by chipping, not by rusting through. Tube-frame steel under a powder coat is the weakest common construction and the one most often sold as heavy duty.
- Product weight. It is a proxy for section thickness. A 57 lb chair and a 9 lb chair are not the same object, whatever the titles say.
- Hardware. "Stainless" named by grade beats "rust-resistant." Plated steel bolts are where load eventually shows up.
- Welds and joints, in photographs. Look at where the back meets the seat. That junction carries the load on every chair in this category.
Our wider view of which materials survive and which ones quietly fail is on the durability roundup, and the corrosion side of it is set out on the rust-proof page.
The budget end, honestly
The Lifetime molded Adirondack publishes the same 300 lb headline figure as poly lumber costing several times as much, on a 20.75 in seat and a 2-year warranty. Both of those facts are true at once, and reading them together is the whole lesson of this page: the capacity number tells you what the chair can hold today, and the warranty tells you how long the maker expects it to keep holding it. For an occasional-use chair that is a reasonable trade. For a chair that gets sat in every evening by the same person at the top of its rating, it is not.
How to buy for weight
- Write down the number you need, then only consider pieces that publish one at or above it. This removes most of the market immediately, which is the point.
- Check the figure on the exact model code you are buying, on the maker's site. Wheels, arms, folding and finish variants all change it.
- Check seat width in the same breath. 22 to 23 inches is noticeably more usable than the 20-inch standard, and it is published far more often than capacity.
- Prefer a named test standard where you can get one. It is the difference between a measurement and a marketing number.
- Read the warranty for load language. Terms that name cracking and structural failure are the ones that matter here; fade exclusions are irrelevant to this decision.
- Buy for the heaviest regular user, not the average one. Static ratings assume a person sitting down, not dropping into the seat.
If this is a chair you will be getting in and out of often, seat height matters as much as capacity — the Grand pattern sits at 16.1 inches and the Classic at 13.9, and that two-inch difference is felt every single time. Our Adirondack buying guide works through the geometry, and POLYWOOD versus Trex covers the two brands that dominate the 300 lb tier.
Heavy-duty construction and serviceable construction are not the same thing, and the difference shows up in the hardware bag: see does patio furniture come assembled.

4. The longest warranty at 300 lb

- Marine-grade stainless hardware
- 20-year residential lumber warranty
- Arrives flat-packed; bolt-together assembly
How it scores

- Rust and corrosion
- 9.5
- Wind and stability
- 8.5
- Build and hardware
- 9.0
- Warranty strength
- 9.5
What works
- Fade behavior is a material property here, not a surface coat that can wear off
- Warranty language explicitly covers splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling and rot
- Heavy enough to stay put on a gusty evening
- Washes clean with soap and water — no sealing, oiling or refinishing, ever
The trade-offs
- Costs multiples of a big-box resin chair, and the value only shows up over years
- Heavy to move around a deck on your own
- Sanding it voids the warranty, so deep scratches stay
