• Style range and parts availability. Easy to live without if you are buying two chairs rather than furnishing a whole deck over several years.

The alternatives, in order

1. A different poly lumber brand — you give up almost nothing

2. Highwood — you give up eight warranty years and gain folding

Twelve years rather than twenty, and hinges where a fixed chair has none. In return you get a chair that folds flat, which means it can be stored, which means it spends four months a year out of the weather entirely. On a small deck that is a genuinely good trade.

3. Teak — you change material rather than tier

A plantation teak Adirondack costs meaningfully less than a premium poly one and lasts comparably. What you give up is color choice — it will be silver-gray within a year unless you oil it annually — and consistency, since grade varies a lot and sapwood content is the weak point. What you gain is natural grain, repairability, and a chair that will still look intentional in a planted garden in twenty years.

4. Blow-molded resin shell — you give up the material

This is a genuinely different product and we list it because it is genuinely useful for some people. A Lifetime-style shell chair is UV-protected polyethylene over a powder-coated steel frame: weatherproof shell, light enough for one person to move a whole deck, and priced at a small fraction of poly lumber. Expect three to six years, and expect the steel frame rather than the shell to be what fails.

It is the right buy for occasional-use seating, for a rental, or for anyone who needs to carry chairs around regularly. It is the wrong buy if you are trying to approximate a poly lumber chair.

The dupes to avoid

The listings to be careful with are the ones that use the vocabulary without the substance:

• "POLYWOOD-style" or "poly wood material" in a title, with no brand named and no warranty stated. This is almost always a hollow shell chair.
• "HDPE" with a two-year warranty. Genuine poly lumber makers warrant for twelve to twenty. Two years means a shell or an unproven compound.
• Very light shipping weights. A solid poly lumber Adirondack is heavy. If the listed weight looks like a folding camp chair, it is one.
• "Recycled plastic" with no board thickness stated. Recycled HDPE lumber is excellent; recycled plastic is a description that covers a great deal of ground.
