What under $1,000 actually buys

A sectional at this price is a steel or light aluminum frame, a PE rattan weave that is probably PVC-based, and printed polyester cushions. That is not a criticism, it is the cost structure: seating four or five people outdoors for under a thousand dollars means something has to give, and those three things are what gives.

What that buys you is real: a usable, comfortable seating group, available now, that will look good for two or three summers and serviceable for a couple more. For a lot of situations — a rental, a first house, a patio whose layout you are still working out — that is exactly the right purchase.

Getting more years out of a budget set

Everything on this list is cheap relative to the set, and together they can realistically turn three summers into six.

1. Cover it, vented, over dry furniture. A cover does more for a budget set than an expensive one, because the budget set is the one with something fragile to protect. Our cover picks explain why venting beats waterproofing.
2. Get the feet off the ground. Steel feet in standing water is the fastest route to a rusted frame. Pads, glides or slabs.
3. Inspect and touch up each spring. Tip a piece over and look at the fastener points and welds. A chip treated in April is nothing; the same chip in October is a rust bloom. Our rust guide covers the sequence.
4. Bring cushions in. They are the component that makes the set look old, and they are the one you can protect completely for free.
5. Rinse the weave out. Grit trapped in the weave abrades strands every time someone sits down. A hose handles it.
6. Do not pressure-wash it. High pressure breaks strands and forces water into frame tubes, where it sits and rusts from the inside.

The alternative worth considering

One option that does not appear in sectional roundups and probably should: at this budget, fewer, better pieces often produce a better patio than a full sectional.

Two poly lumber chairs and a small table will cost about the same as a five-piece budget sectional, seat two comfortably instead of five awkwardly, and still be there in twenty years. If your patio is genuinely used by two people most of the time — which most patios are — that is worth thinking about before buying seating for a party you have twice a year.
