A Cape Cod chair is an Adirondack chair with a straighter back and a squarer silhouette. Both have the fanned slat back, the wide flat arms and the sloping seat; the Cape Cod version sits you more upright, which makes it easier to get out of and less inviting to fall asleep in. There is no separate chair type here — Cape Cod is a profile within the Adirondack family, and on Amazon it is also the model name of Trex Outdoor Furniture's version.
The short answer
If a listing offers you "Adirondack" and "Cape Cod" as alternatives, it is offering you two back angles. The classic Adirondack reclines hard — roughly 100 to 105 degrees between seat and back on the traditional pattern — and drops the seat front low. A Cape Cod profile closes that angle up and squares the back and arm lines, which raises your shoulders and shortens the distance you have to travel to stand up.
Everything else about the two is a styling decision. Materials, warranties and build quality vary by maker, not by profile, which means you choose the profile on how you want to sit and then choose the chair on the specifications that matter — our Adirondack buying guide covers the second half.
The geometry that differs
Three measurements separate them, and they interact:
- Back angle. The defining difference. A deeper recline puts your weight into the backrest and your knees above your hips. An upright back keeps your weight over your feet.
- Seat slope and front height. The traditional Adirondack seat slopes back sharply and sits low at the front. That is what makes it comfortable to settle into and awkward to rise from. A Cape Cod seat is flatter and generally a little higher.
- Back height and slat shape. Classic Adirondacks fan outward with a curved or rounded top. Cape Cod backs tend to be straighter-sided with a flatter crown, which is where the squarer look comes from.
The practical consequence is a comfort trade-off that runs in one direction. The reclined chair is better for a long evening with a drink and worse for anything else — eating, working, getting up repeatedly, or sitting down with a knee that does not bend far. The upright chair is the more versatile piece of furniture and the less luxurious one.
Side by side
Classic Adirondack and Cape Cod profiles compared
| Classic Adirondack | Cape Cod profile | |
|---|---|---|
| Back angle | Deeply reclined, around 100-105 degrees | More upright; shoulders sit higher |
| Seat | Low at the front, sloping back sharply | Flatter and usually a little higher |
| Silhouette | Fanned back, curved crown, flowing lines | Squarer, straighter sides, flatter crown |
| Getting out of it | The known weakness of the design | Noticeably easier |
| Best for | Long evenings, fire pits, lake views | Dining-adjacent use, mixed-ability households, porches |
| Reading or eating in it | Awkward - you are lying back | Workable |
| Footstool wanted? | Yes, and it completes the chair | Optional |
| Materials and warranty | No profile difference. Depends entirely on the maker | No profile difference. Depends entirely on the maker |
Neither profile is standardized. Two makers' Adirondacks can differ from each other more than one maker's Adirondack differs from its own Cape Cod, so published seat and back dimensions beat the name every time.
A name that is also a model
There is a complication worth knowing, because it explains most of the confusion in search results. Cape Cod is also a specific product name: the Trex Outdoor Furniture Cape Cod Adirondack. Trex Outdoor Furniture is HDPE poly lumber built under license by the same manufacturer behind POLYWOOD — the relationship is set out in POLYWOOD versus Trex — and its Cape Cod chair carries a squarer profile and the same 20-year residential warranty as the category leader.
So "Adirondack vs Cape Cod" is sometimes a question about chair shapes and sometimes a question about two particular chairs. If it is the second, the answer is straightforward: both are through-colored HDPE with stainless hardware and matching warranty terms, and the choice is the back angle. The same pattern of a regional name becoming a product name is what happens with Adirondack versus Muskoka chairs, where the two names describe the same chair on opposite sides of a border.
Which profile suits you
- Choose the classic Adirondack if the chair has one job — sitting outside at the end of the day, facing something worth facing. It is the better chair at that job and it is not close. Add the ottoman.
- Choose a Cape Cod profile if the chair has to work for more than that: a porch where people come and go, a household where somebody will struggle with a deep recline, or a deck where the chairs also get used around a table.
- Choose neither if getting up is the main concern. A rocker or a dining-height chair is a better answer than a compromise Adirondack — our seat-height page for seniors works through the numbers, and the rocking chairs roundup covers the alternative.
- Decide the material separately. HDPE poly lumber for no maintenance, teak if you want wood and will clean it. The comparison is in POLYWOOD versus teak, and the full field is in the best Adirondack chairs.

2. Classic Adirondack profile
POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack Chair
POLYWOOD · Score 9.3/10
The reference HDPE Adirondack: color compounded through the lumber, a 20-year residential warranty, and nothing on it to rust or splinter.
Key specifications
- 100% HDPE lumber, color and UV inhibitors compounded through the material
- Marine-grade stainless hardware
- 20-year residential lumber warranty
- Arrives flat-packed; bolt-together assembly
How it scores
- Fade resistance
- 9.5
- Rust and corrosion
- 9.5
- Wind and stability
- 8.5
- Build and hardware
- 9.0
- Warranty strength
- 9.5
What works
- Fade behavior is a material property here, not a surface coat that can wear off
- Warranty language explicitly covers splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling and rot
- Heavy enough to stay put on a gusty evening
- Washes clean with soap and water — no sealing, oiling or refinishing, ever
The trade-offs
- Costs multiples of a big-box resin chair, and the value only shows up over years
- Heavy to move around a deck on your own
- Sanding it voids the warranty, so deep scratches stay
