How outdoor fabric is colored
Everything about outdoor fabric durability comes down to one question: is the color in the fiber or on it?
Solution dyeing adds pigment to the liquid polymer before the fiber is extruded. Every fiber is colored all the way through, so as the surface weathers there is identical color underneath. Fading is uniform and extremely slow.
Piece dyeing and printing apply color to fabric that has already been woven. The color sits on the surface. UV breaks it down from the top, so fading is patchy, worst where the sun hits hardest, and shows sharp lines where a fold or a seam was shaded.

Color life assumes a canopy in full sun through a US summer. Shaded or seasonal use extends all three considerably.
Where olefin fits
Solution-dyed olefin is the genuinely interesting middle option and it is often overlooked. It is solution-dyed, so it fades uniformly rather than patchily, and it costs considerably less than acrylic. It is not as UV-stable over many years and the hand is a little stiffer, but for someone who wants better-than-polyester without acrylic pricing it is the right answer.
Reading a fabric specification
Outdoor fabric listings use a lot of words that sound like commitments and are not.

Caring for a canopy
Fabric lasts longer with very little effort, and the highest-value habits are not the obvious ones.
- Let it dry before closing it. A canopy closed wet and left tied is a dark humid tube — which is how mildew starts, and mildew stains are the hardest thing to remove from any outdoor fabric.
- Brush off debris regularly. Mildew grows on organic matter sitting on the fabric, not on the fabric itself. Pollen and leaf litter are the food source.
- Wash with mild soap and water, not detergent. Harsh detergents strip water-repellent finishes.
- Diluted bleach is safe on solution-dyed acrylic. It is one of the practical advantages — the color is in the fiber, so bleach kills mildew without touching the color. Do not do this on printed polyester.
- Store the canopy for winter. Months of storms plus months of UV that you were not even enjoying. Removing it buys a whole season of color life.
If the canopy is beyond saving but the frame is sound, check whether the manufacturer sells a replacement canopy. On better umbrellas they do, and it is far cheaper than a new umbrella — one of the quiet arguments for buying a brand whose parts exist.
