The table top decides most of it
A dining set has a structural weak point that seating does not: the largest flat surface on your patio, collecting standing water and leaf litter, and on a surprising number of sets made of tempered glass.

Chairs: stacking, cushions and comfort
Dining chairs sit upright, which means they need less material than lounge seating and are far more sensitive to seat-edge comfort. Three things to weigh:
- Do they stack or nest? Stacking chairs are dramatically easier to store and to clear for a storm. On a small patio this is close to a requirement.
- Do they need cushions? Slatted HDPE and contoured aluminum are fine bare. Flat wooden or metal seats are not, over a two-hour meal. A set that needs cushions has acquired a consumable and a winter storage job.
- What are the chair frames made of? On budget sets the table is often acacia and the chairs are steel-framed rattan, which means the set's lifespan is set by the chairs rather than the table. Check both.
Sizing honestly
Manufacturers count seats generously. A rectangular table advertised for six is comfortable for four adults and workable for six if nobody needs an elbow.

Allow clear space behind every chair for people to push back and stand. It is the dimension most often forgotten and the one that makes a patio feel cramped.
Round tables seat more people in less floor area than rectangles and have no head of the table, which is why we treat them as their own recommendation on the round-table page. For a balcony or courtyard, a bistro set is the correct product rather than a compromise.
The umbrella hole
Not a detail. A center hole plus a weighted base turns a dining set into a shaded dining set, and shade is the cheapest comfort upgrade in the entire category — it is also what keeps your cushions, table top and everyone sitting at it out of direct UV.
Two things to check before buying a table without one, or with one:
- Hole diameter versus pole diameter. Standard market umbrella poles are not universal. Check both numbers.
- The base still has to be weighted. A table helps brace a pole, but it does not substitute for ballast. See our base picks.
If a table has no hole, the alternative is a cantilever umbrella placed beside it, which shades without a pole through the middle and costs more in both money and ballast.
Winter, and the maintenance bill
A dining set is the hardest thing on a patio to bring indoors — a table and six chairs is a lot of garage. So the honest way to compare sets is to include what each one asks of you every year.
