Why choose a cantilever

A cantilever — also called an offset umbrella — puts the support pole to one side and hangs the canopy out over the area you want shaded. The advantage is specific and real: you can shade a seating group, a lounger, or a table that has no umbrella hole, without a pole standing in the middle of it.

For an outdoor sofa or a pair of loungers, that is transformative. A center-pole umbrella simply cannot shade a sectional, because there is nowhere for the pole to go.

Most also rotate and tilt, so a single canopy can follow the sun through an afternoon rather than shading the right spot for one hour and the wrong one thereafter.

The stability trade-off

The cost of that geometry is stability, and it is not a small cost.

A center-pole umbrella loads its base straight down, and when set through a dining table the table braces the pole against sideways movement. A cantilever does neither. The canopy hangs out to one side, so the base is resisting a tipping moment before any wind arrives at all, and there is no table helping.

Add wind and both components get worse: the sideways push acts through a long horizontal arm, and the lift generated over the canopy pulls upward at the far end from the base.

Base requirements

Cantilever bases are a different product from market-umbrella bases, and the difference is not just weight.

• Cross-arm geometry. A cross base spreads ballast out to four points, which resists the tipping moment far better than the same weight concentrated in a central puck.
• Considerably more weight than a market base. This is the number most often underestimated, and most cantilevers ship with far less than they need.
• Plates or slabs. Cross bases accept weight plates or standard patio slabs. Slabs are usually much cheaper than proprietary plates and work just as well.
• Off the wet ground. Cross bases are almost always steel, and steel sitting in standing water at four contact points rusts exactly there. Slabs or pads underneath help — our rust guide covers the treatment when it starts.

Round versus rectangular

The honest summary: buy rectangular only if your seating is genuinely rectangular and your site is genuinely sheltered. It is the format with the most sail area on this entire site, and it will need the most weight under it.

When not to buy one

• If wind is your main concern. A vented market umbrella through a table is more stable, full stop. Our wind page is explicit about this.
• If you have a table with an umbrella hole. Use it. The hole and the table are doing real structural work for free.
• If the ballast is not in your budget. A cantilever with an inadequate base is worse than no umbrella — it is a heavy object that will fall on something.
• On a balcony. The combination of height, turbulence, a large sail and a structure you do not own is a bad one. See our balcony guidance.
• If you will not close it. Cantilevers are heavier and more awkward to close than market umbrellas, which means in practice they get left open more often. Be honest about whether you will do it.
