Why a slatted poly top wins
Outdoor tables fail in predictable ways, and a slatted HDPE top removes every one of them at once.
- It drains. Rain falls through the gaps rather than pooling on a sealed surface. Leaf litter does not sit in standing water against a join.
- There is no finish. Color is compounded through the board, so there is nothing to lift, peel or refinish. POLYWOOD states this directly — UV inhibitors and pigments are in the material, not on it.
- There is no glass. Nothing to shatter, nothing hazardous to clear up.
- There is no veneer. The most common failure on cheap outdoor tables simply does not exist here.
- There is no ferrous metal. Hardware is stainless; the structure is lumber. Nothing can rust.
Which is why the warranty can be what it is: twenty years residential, naming splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling and rot.

Three real costs, and one of them is bigger than people expect.
Weight
A seven-piece poly lumber set is genuinely heavy — a two-person job to position, and not something you will casually rearrange. Decide the layout before assembly, because moving it afterward is an event.
The flip side is that it does not move in wind, which on an exposed deck is worth a great deal.
Price
Several times a comparable acacia set. The arithmetic works over a long horizon — we run the numbers on the cost-math page — but it only works if you are still there to collect.
The seat is hard
Slatted HDPE dining chairs are fine for a meal and less fine for a three-hour lunch. Cushions are available, and adding them reintroduces the one consumable the set otherwise does not have. If you go that way, use solution-dyed acrylic and bring them in for winter — otherwise you have a permanent table with an annual cushion problem.

- You have no storage and the set will live outside permanently.
- You own the home and plan to stay.
- The site is exposed or windy, where weight is a functional advantage.
- You are near a pool or the coast — chlorine and salt do nothing to HDPE.
- You will not do an annual maintenance job, and know it.
