Best round patio dining tables

The geometry argument

A round table seats more people in less floor area than a rectangle of equivalent capacity, and it does so for a reason worth understanding: seating capacity depends on usable perimeter, and a circle encloses the most area for a given perimeter — which means, run the other way, it gives you perimeter without the long footprint a rectangle needs.

More practically, a rectangular table wastes its corners. Nobody sits at a corner, so a six-seat rectangle has two chunks of table doing nothing but occupying floor. A round table of similar capacity has none.

Sizing a round table

Round tables are sized by diameter, and the relationship between diameter and comfortable seating is tighter than for rectangles because everyone competes for the same continuous edge.

• Two seats — a small bistro diameter. Genuinely comfortable for two people and a couple of plates, not for a spread.
• Four seats — the most common size and the one most patios want. Four people eat comfortably with room for serving dishes in the middle.
• Six seats — workable, and this is where the reach-across problem begins. A large round table puts the center out of arm's reach for everyone, which is why a lazy Susan exists as a product category.
• Beyond six — the geometry stops working. Go rectangular.

Allow generous clear space around the whole table for chairs to pull back. On a round table this applies in every direction, not just two.

The umbrella advantage

A round table is the natural home for a center-pole market umbrella. The hole is at the geometric center, every seat is equidistant from the pole, and a round canopy over a round table produces even shade with no awkward uncovered corner.

On a long rectangular table, a single center umbrella leaves the ends in sun for part of the day — which is why large rectangular setups often end up needing two umbrellas, or a cantilever placed off to one side.

Where round loses

• Against a wall or railing. A round table pushed against a wall wastes the contact arc. Rectangles fit walls.
• Past six seats. Reach across the middle becomes impractical.
• Serving space. The center of a large round table is hard to reach, which affects how you serve rather than how you sit.
• Narrow spaces. A long narrow deck wants a long narrow table.
